The carpet has doubled our work space. Who doesn't like more space? Just being in this new space gives students a sense of freedom. We have focused lessons on the carpet, class games, and small groups projects. \r\n\r\nDuring an open house event at school the carpet was used for a literacy cake walk game. If players landed on a particular carpet square associated with a word or letter sound they won a small snack cake. \r\n\r\nThe easel is used by me for whole group lessons and also by students to practice writing skills in small groups. Third-graders are very curious and these non-fiction texts really capture their interests. The texts also relate to science and social studies topics.\r\n\r\nReading non-fiction requires a different set of skills than fiction reading. Students need to think about the main idea of the articles and how different sections relate to the main idea. They see how the author reveals facts and answers common questions about a topic. They may discover that one text cannot cover all the information they are looking for. They may seek out another text on the same topic. Comparing the information in these two texts develops critical thinking skills.\r\n\r\nAlso students better understand how non-fiction text is organized by seeing many examples of non-fiction text features. We study the function of the table of contents, headings, captions, and glossaries.","fullyFundedDate":1756669109289,"projectUrl":"project/news-we-can-use/9500227/","projectTitle":"News We Can Use","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Krochalk","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7643927_orig.jpg?crop=521,521,x0,y69&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1659546866808","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7643927"},{"teacherId":9875462,"projectId":9814435,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students now have access to essential hygiene items—deodorant, lotion, chapstick, and body wipes—that they truly needed. These resources have already made a meaningful difference in our classroom. As a physical education teacher working with Grades 1 to middle schoolers, I often have students who quietly struggle with hygiene but are too embarrassed to ask for help. Now, with your donations, these items are available discreetly and without shame.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stood out was during our PE warm-up on Monday. A student who usually avoids physical activity because of self-consciousness approached me to ask if he could use one of the deodorants. Afterward, he joined the class confidently and participated more than I've ever seen him do. Moments like this remind me how something so simple can change a student's entire day.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the items, their faces lit up. Some were surprised that people they've never met cared enough to support them. Others immediately expressed relief, knowing this would help them feel more comfortable at school. These small acts of kindness helped build their confidence and showed them that their needs matter.\r\n\r\nThese resources will continue to support our students daily, especially in PE and after-school activities. As we move into our unit on teamwork and sportsmanship, students now feel more at ease working in groups and participating fully. The next steps for us include integrating more lessons on self-care, confidence-building, and wellness—made easier because their basic needs are being met.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students dignity, comfort, and the reassurance that they are supported. Your impact goes far beyond the materials themselves—you've helped create a safe, caring learning environment where students can thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1762496415540,"projectUrl":"project/fresh-clean-and-confident-supporting/9814435/","projectTitle":"Fresh, Clean, and Confident: Supporting Student Hygiene and Self-Care","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Jo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9875462_orig.jpg?crop=1107,1107,x0,y33&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1734532332195","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9875462"},{"teacherId":2052736,"projectId":8537844,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support in providing flexible seating options for our classroom.
