The day the supplies arrived was so much fun, my students were thrilled to see the big box of colored pencils and couldn't wait to dive in. They immediately started brainstorming new ideas for their projects and loved having so many colors to choose from.\r\n\r\nWe've been using these supplies throughout the whole year, and they have helped with so many projects and activities in our classroom sketchbooks. The colored pencils have been especially popular, students have been able to add more detail and personality to their artwork than ever before. The extra erasers mean everyone can experiment, make changes, and really take creative risks without worrying about mistakes.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, our art room is stocked and ready for more creative adventures. Up next, we'll be working on self-portraits, and I know the students are excited to use all these new materials to show off their unique styles. Having snacks readily available helps ensure that all students can concentrate, participate, and feel supported during the school day. What may seem like a small gesture truly has a big impact.\r\n\r\nThe Slim Jims and granola bars have been especially appreciated because they are easy, filling, and student-approved. We use the snacks during longer math problem-solving sessions when students are working on challenging tasks that require sustained focus and deep thinking, especially when they are explaining their reasoning using Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER). One moment that really stood out was seeing students who normally struggle to stay engaged remain focused, collaborate with their peers, and persist through difficult problems without giving up. Having access to snacks removed a real barrier to learning and helped create a calm, focused, and productive classroom environment.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the snacks, they were genuinely excited and incredibly grateful. Several students commented that it helped them concentrate better and feel more prepared to learn. It also sent a powerful message to them that people outside our classroom care about their success, which boosted both their motivation and their confidence.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue using the snacks to support students during rigorous lessons that involve multi-step problem solving, math discussions, and written explanations of their thinking. While it may seem like a small change, the backpack rack has had a noticeable effect on organization, safety, efficiency, and overall classroom culture.\r\n\r\nSafety has been a major benefit. Backpacks on the floor can quickly become tripping hazards, especially in a busy middle school classroom where students are constantly moving. The rolling rack keeps walkways clear and reduces the risk of falls or injuries. These materials support students in building, revising, and justifying their mathematical thinking in ways that pencil-and-paper tasks alone could not accomplish. One recent example comes from our unit on solving systems of equations. Students were given a real-world problem involving cost comparisons, where one equation was written in standard form and the other represented a rate of change. Using the new markers and whiteboard space, groups worked through multiple representations—tables, graphs, and symbolic equations—discussing which evidence best supported their claims and how to organize that reasoning clearly. The math tools, especially algebra tiles and graphing supports, helped several students visualize the structure of the problem before moving into the written CER portion. The materials allowed students to efficiently revise their work as their conversations deepened, and the erasers (something we previously lacked enough of) made it possible for groups to iterate without disruption. This one project demonstrated how the resources directly support rigorous mathematical discussions and help students justify their solutions with clarity.\r\n\r\nStudents responded positively when the materials were integrated into their routines—not because they were new, but because they solved practical barriers that often interfered with collaborative problem-solving. Before receiving these supplies, students frequently had to wait for working markers or share limited tools, which slowed down their progress during CER discussions. With the new resources available at every table, students were able to focus entirely on the math: constructing diagrams, revising equations, and documenting the evidence they would use to support their claims. Their reaction was one of relief and readiness. They immediately used the tools to organize their thinking more efficiently, and I noticed a shift in the quality of their mathematical conversations. With consistent access to markers and manipulatives, students engaged more fully and asked more precise questions of one another—questions like, \"Does this representation actually support our claim?\" and \"Which piece of evidence best proves the intersection point?\" The materials improved the structure and depth of their discussions rather than simply adding novelty or excitement.\r\n\r\nOur next steps involve continuing to integrate CER into increasingly complex problem-solving tasks and reinforcing the habits of mathematical conversation that the students have been developing. We are beginning a unit in which students analyze linear relationships in multiple contexts, and the markers and tools will be used to model scenarios, compare strategies, and prepare written explanations that clearly connect claims to evidence. Students will also participate in group \"reasoning checks,\" where they leave their whiteboard models visible for peers to review and critique. This process strengthens their ability to justify their thinking and supports the long-term goal of helping students communicate mathematically with confidence and precision. The donors' contribution has ensured that every student can fully engage in this work without the interruptions or limitations we previously faced. These tools will continue to play a direct role in helping students develop strong reasoning skills and maintain productive, collaborative math conversations throughout the year.","fullyFundedDate":1757528898842,"projectUrl":"project/tools-to-experience-math/9482800/","projectTitle":"Tools To Experience Math","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rico","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1490785_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1504571820842","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/arico"},{"teacherId":3119681,"projectId":9627143,"letterContent":"I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks for your generosity in helping provide snacks for our classroom.
