Even during the move back to the Palisades, we lost some items in the move back to the main campus. My room is now fully decorated again and I have colored pencils and markers for kids to make posters. We use the Biology Coloring Book to have kids color in different concepts in Biology. Students appeared wide-eyed at all the new tools to work with. \r\n\r\nBecause of privacy laws, sharing pictures of kids is sketchy without parent permission. I have instead opted for showing you the room and some of the items. \r\n\r\nI am very grateful for the generous contributions. I feel like the speed and efficiency through this system is superior. I have received the supplies needed to help practice concepts. \r\n\r\nWhile I asked for markers and pencils, the results of these will be shown in future lessons that I do with students.","fullyFundedDate":1771773700145,"projectUrl":"project/class-participation-supplies/10110892/","projectTitle":"Class Participation Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Van Name","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1394002_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y355&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755563284202","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1394002"},{"teacherId":814826,"projectId":10052636,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, my classroom at Palisades High School is beginning to feel whole again. After the Palisades Fire, we returned to a space that was stripped of the tools and technology that once supported nearly three decades of teaching and learning. The new short-throw projector you helped fund is more than just a piece of equipment—it is the heart of daily instruction. It allows me to project vibrant diagrams, lab demonstrations, data sets, and student work clearly and safely in our smaller, rebuilt space. In Marine Biology especially, being able to zoom in on microscopic structures, coral reef ecosystems, or shark anatomy transforms abstract concepts into vivid, shared experiences. It brings our lessons back to life and allows every student, no matter where they sit, to fully engage.\r\n\r\nThe printer ink you provided may seem simple, but it is just as essential. It allows me to print lab guides, scientific articles, graphic organizers, and hands-on materials that students can annotate, manipulate, and use during experiments. After losing so many physical resources to smoke damage, having the ability to produce high-quality instructional materials again restores a sense of normalcy and preparedness. It ensures that my students have what they need in their hands, especially those who learn best by writing, highlighting, and interacting directly with printed content.\r\n\r\nYour support has done more than replace supplies; it has restored opportunity. It has given my students access to engaging, high-quality instruction in a classroom that is still rebuilding. After the Palisades Fire, our classroom was stripped down to bare walls. We lost 29 years of accumulated materials including all of our dissection tools and specimens. Dissection is not just an activity; it's a powerful opportunity for students to explore anatomy, practice scientific observation, ask questions, and connect textbook concepts to the real structures of living organisms. Your donations have restored that experience. Instead of simply looking at diagrams, my students can now carefully investigate, collaborate, and build the confidence that comes from doing real science.\r\n\r\nThe donated iPad has also transformed the way I teach in our rebuilt space. It allows me to project detailed images, model techniques up close during dissections, capture student work, and integrate interactive lessons in ways that keep students engaged. In a classroom that once felt empty after the fire, this technology has brought energy and possibility back into our daily learning.\r\n\r\nYour support is more than supplies and equipment, it is a reminder to my students that their education matters to a community beyond our campus. He had on a light jacket -- and was carrying an even lighter backpack that didn't include a breakfast, snack, or lunch. But he knew that you had his back.\r\n\r\nAs I unlocked the door to the classroom, I asked Carlos to join me inside. Without saying a word, he walked in and took his seat and put his head down. \"Would you like breakfast, Carlos?\" I asked. By uttering those five words, magic happened. Carlos lifted his head -- and I suspect that the sadness that often weighs him down lifted, too. \r\n\r\nMany young adults don't have the opportunity to start the day with a healthy breakfast. But, thanks to your generous gift, I now better positioned to help Carlos and so many of my other students at Pali Academy, the credit-recovery program at Palisades Charter High School. By 7:15 a.m. -- one full hour before school begins -- there usually are a dozen students in my room. The cafeteria begins serving breakfast at 7:30 a.m., and getting an additional snack from me ensures that students will have the nutrition they need to be ready for their first class of the day.\r\n\r\nThis snack program is important to me for a number of reasons. Although I graduated from high school 49 years ago, I still remember what it was like to arrive to school hungry. The only breakfast available to me every morning at home was the One-a-Day vitamin and room-temperature glass of orange juice my mother had put on the counter before going to bed at about midnight. She didn't get up to see us off to school, so the house was quiet. If there was a quarter in the dish on the dining room table, I could take the city bus to school, avoiding a 1.5 mile walk. As a 9th-grader, I landed a job in the cafeteria, which allowed me to get a free meal every day.\r\n\r\nI still have memories of my stomach growling in early-morning college classes, and I am so thankful to have the opportunity provide my students with a breakfast bar or an afternoon snack every day.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for supporting my work -- and the students who I serve. By working together, we can make a difference in the lives of young adults like Carlos. Somehow, the morning chill doesn't feel as cold when there's a warm snack (and smile) in Room J120.","fullyFundedDate":1771092474805,"projectUrl":"project/healthy-snacks-for-students/10096549/","projectTitle":"Healthy Snacks For Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Saxon","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7366219_orig.jpg?crop=566,566,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754597166664","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7366219"},{"teacherId":10437817,"projectId":10102839,"letterContent":"The new resources have already made a remarkable difference in how students use our Career Center. One moment that stood out was when a junior came in feeling overwhelmed about how to begin her scholarship search; within minutes she was standing at the new board, outlining her goals while I added notes beside her. Seeing her ideas become visible and organized helped her immediately relax and refocus.\r\nThe mini‑fridge and shelving station have brought a level of comfort and professionalism to the space. Students often come in during lunch or after school for guidance, and having a small, dedicated spot to store drinks or snacks allows them to settle in and stay engaged through longer advising sessions. The shelving unit also keeps our career materials, laptops, and handouts organized and accessible, making the entire office more functional and student‑friendly.\r\nWhen students first saw the upgrades, they commented on how \"official\" and \"welcoming\" the Career Center feels now. Several said it feels more like a college advising center, which is exactly the environment we want to create for them — a place that inspires future planning and confident decision‑making.\r\nAs next steps, students will be using these new tools during upcoming résumé workshops, college essay planning sessions, and internship application appointments. The improved organization and the more polished, collaborative workspace make it easier for them to focus on their goals and take ownership of their post‑secondary planning.\r\nThank you for helping us create a space where students feel supported, capable, and excited about their futures. When students first saw the new materials, they were genuinely thrilled and incredibly appreciative. Their excitement and gratitude were immediate, and your support made our return to campus feel smoother, more comforting, and far less overwhelming. Knowing that people care about their education and well-being has meant so much to them.\r\n\r\nWe have already begun using these resources in meaningful and engaging ways. The laminator and pouches have allowed us to create interactive learning experiences, including a recent Financial Literacy \"Build a Budget\" activity where students physically moved around the room to choose between options and make class decisions together. This kinesthetic approach made learning active, memorable, and fun. I have also used the laminator to preserve and display outstanding student work, such as an AP U.S. History project in which students annotated a skeleton and wrote an \"Autopsy Report\" explaining how the Great Depression economically \"killed\" Mr. America and how the New Deal attempted to revive the economy. Seeing their work proudly displayed has been incredibly motivating for them.\r\n\r\nYour support has also directly impacted student well-being and daily learning. The microwave and refrigerator have allowed me to store food and drinks for students who experience food insecurity, helping them focus on learning without the distraction of hunger. The clipboards were recently used during a Pro Se Court activity debating whether the atomic bombs were necessary to end World War II, where students organized arguments and counterarguments while moving around the room. They especially loved the colorful clipboards and commented on how much more enjoyable they were to use.
