These new tools have quickly become an important part of our daily learning. We use them during math, phonics, and reading lessons so students can show their thinking, practice new skills, and try again without worrying about making mistakes. One special moment happened during a math lesson on number patterns when students worked together to solve problems and explain their thinking on their boards. Watching them confidently write, erase, revise, and try again showed how these simple tools help build persistence and problem-solving skills.\r\n\r\nWhen the whiteboards first arrived, the students were thrilled. There was an immediate buzz of excitement as they realized they each had their own space to write and share ideas. Even students who are sometimes hesitant to participate became eager to hold up their boards and show their answers. The boards have made lessons more interactive and have given every child a voice during instruction.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we will continue using the tabletop whiteboards during reading, writing, and math to strengthen foundational skills. Students will practice building words, solving equations, drawing models, and explaining their thinking to classmates. These whiteboards help create a classroom where students feel safe to try, make mistakes, and grow as learners. We use them daily during our phonics and small group reading lessons. Students build words, change sounds, and practice blending letters together to read new words. One of my favorite classroom moments was watching a student build the word cat, then proudly switch the first letter to make bat, hat, and sat. That moment helped the entire group see how changing just one sound can create a new word.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were incredibly excited. They immediately wanted to explore the letters and began making words together on their desks and magnetic boards. The hands-on experience makes learning much more engaging, especially for early readers who benefit from seeing, touching, and moving letters while they learn.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue using the magnetic letters as part of our structured literacy lessons. Students will work on building more complex words, practicing spelling patterns, and collaborating with classmates to solve word challenges. These tools are helping my students grow more confident as readers every day, and we are so grateful for your support in making this possible.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our classroom and our young learners.\r\n\r\n— Karen Horner\r\nFirst Grade Teacher 🍎📖","fullyFundedDate":1764625103458,"projectUrl":"project/magnetic-letters-to-build-strong-early-r/9919745/","projectTitle":"Magnetic Letters to Build Strong Early Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Horner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10089153_orig.jpg?crop=188,188,x0,y18&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753240930239","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10089153"},{"teacherId":3787739,"projectId":9990612,"letterContent":"I am so grateful for your generous support in providing a class set of The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan for my fourth grade students. Your generosity has had an enormous impact on our class.\r\n\r\nMy students are among the most curious and resilient I have ever worked with. Many of my students are also bilingual/multilingual learners and receive special education services. My students thrive when they can learn through hands-on, interactive activities, and the Learning Science activity tubs and Dowling magnet kits truly made science come alive for them.\r\n\r\nNow, instead of simply reading about different scientific concepts, my students are building circuits, testing motion, and discovering the properties of magnets through hands-on experimentation. The materials fostered collaboration, problem-solving, and academic conversations as students tested hypotheses, made predictions, and learned from their mistakes. Some students who were reluctant participants in other lesson formats have become confident and enthusiastic investigators and are excited to share their findings with their classmates.\r\n\r\nThe kits enabled me to expand my use of inquiry-based instruction and to develop and implement more inclusive, hands-on learning activities that allow students to access grade-level science standards in ways that feel both accessible and engaging for all of my students. A special thank you to The Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation for supporting this project. Your funding provided a great opportunity for students to engage in scientific inquiry, question and challenge assumptions, and see themselves as capable scientists and problem solvers.\r\n\r\nThank you for providing such a wonderful spark to ignite curiosity, confidence, and a true love of learning in my classroom. Pajama Days are something we do often at our school, and they are always filled with excitement. After all, what child doesn't love the chance to come to school feeling warm, comfortable, and included?\r\n\r\nIn the past, I've had students share that they didn't wear pajamas in their home country and didn't have any here.
