Because of your generosity, we were able to purchase the shakers, drums, and other instruments that are needed make Latin Dance rhythms such as Salsa, Bachata, and Cumbia. This made our Latin Dance unit more than a dance unit, it made it a holistic unit on the people, language, history, musicality, and overall culture of Latin Dance. The guira, huevo, and bongo drums are all used in these Latin rhythms, so students learned to identify the rhythms, and then they learned how to recreate them. This has opened up space for students to engage in the dance class beyond the act of dance itself, which makes it more accessible to a variety of learners and students with different entry levels in terms of their dance skills.\r\n\r\nNot only have the instruments made a splash for this unit, but they've sparked interest in expanding musicality for other kinds of dance/movement, such as West African dance and rhythm and modern beat making. Many of my students come to class hungry and struggle to focus, participate, or stay engaged when their basic needs are unmet. Since receiving these items, students are able to quietly grab a snack and continue learning without the distraction of hunger. A moment that truly stood out was seeing a student who normally puts their head down during class perk up and rejoin the lesson after eating—small moments like that make a huge difference.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the food supplies, they were genuinely excited and relieved. Several students expressed gratitude and shared that they often skip meals during the school day because they do not like the cafeteria food or choose to wait until after school to eat. Knowing that they have access to nourishment in the classroom has helped them feel supported, cared for, and more comfortable asking for what they need.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, my students can now focus on learning instead of hunger. As we continue our lessons, having these resources available will allow students to stay engaged, participate more actively, and perform at their best.
