I just knew that I put my students and their creativity at the forefront. Since funding this project, my students were not only able to learn more about HBCUs, but they also conducted research and partnered with a classmate to study an HBCU that I felt matched their interests. I was able to take this project even taken further, through a grant I received that allowed each child to receive their very own shirt from the HBCU and the college flag. During this period of Black History Month, they were also able to showcase this information at our school and on our school districts NAAPID Family Day. Parents were able to come in and listen to these wonderful presentations about their HBCU and as they watched and listened, faces lit up. My students families were very proud and amazed at how engaged and excited they were about this project. I even had a parent tell me, \"Thank you for introducing Morehouse to my son, he now knows what college he wants to go to when he grows up.\" Statements like this motivate me to continue the work I do and none of this would be possible without Donor's Choose. It suddenly becomes like Christmas in our room as supplies that help support our student's learning begin to arrive. The students, as well as the interventionists on my team, get super excited about the new manipulatives, or the new books, or whatever we get as it all comes rolling in. \r\nThere are two things that happen when you place money towards our projects. The first thing is that a new burst of excitement about what we are learning shows up. Our students begin to show more curiosity in the lessons and more stamina to work through challenging things. The second thing is that there is a sense or relief when manipulatives are placed in their hands that they can physically touch and visually feel to help their understanding. \r\nThank you never seems to be enough, but it is the best I have. You are amazing for pouring into our kiddos. I prototyped using them with my 4 5th grade classes, who check out the most books on average. The bins have made allowed both students and books to get down to the library much faster and safer. Everything actually fits, too!\r\n\r\nThe students were excited from moment one, and they've kept that excitement. They still debate who should get who wheel the crate back to their rooms, far more than who had to lift the heavy milk crate. The decodable books have been especially helpful in reinforcing foundational skills like vowel rules, digraphs, and blends, all of which align well with our UFLI curriculum.\r\n\r\nOur older students have enjoyed the challenge of the chapter books, and the comic books have become a favorite for reviewing key concepts in a way that feels fun and accessible. Each kid who has been able to touch the sand has fallen in love and wants to return as soon as possible. Many kids want to set up their house and explore relationships with the people figurines, while some kids want to make a race track or bury animals to dig up later. It is incredible what can come out through this practice, and it has allowed my students to understand and express the world around them. The mini figures have been a huge hit, and while the sand can be a lot to clean, it is so worth it!
