At the start of this school year, I found four chairs to go with it—but unfortunately, one was too big, two were too small, and one was rickety. While we technically had a table and a work area, it wasn't a space students wanted to use.\r\n\r\nThe chairs purchased with your donation have completely changed that. We are now able to use this space regularly and meaningfully. Students work there with partners or independently, and I use it to meet with students for instruction and support. Your donation truly opened this area of the classroom to us.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, the chairs allow for movement and gentle wobbling, which is essential for students who struggle to sit still. They are able to get the movement their bodies need in a way that doesn't interrupt their own learning or the learning of others.\r\n\r\nThank you again. During reading time, students spread out on the rug to read independently or work with partners, which has helped them stay focused and engaged. We also use the rug for small-group instruction, math games, and discussions, giving students a comfortable place to learn together.\r\n\r\nSince adding the rug, students are more eager to participate, collaborate, and take pride in their classroom. Having a welcoming, designated space has improved their attention during lessons and encouraged respectful listening and teamwork. We know that we don't tend to enjoy doing things we aren't good at. These games are giving them needed practice in a way that students do enjoy.\r\n\r\nWe have also begun to use the lamination sheets. All the kindergarten students went home with a laminated name with instructions on how to correctly write each letter in their name. The students were so excited to see all the new Desmond Cole books. I had purchased many of the titles at the beginning of the last school year. The series has since grown and some of the books I had purchased have been lost. The students had read and enjoyed all the titles that were left. Now they are able to reading the new and missing books. \r\n\r\nMy students are not good readers. Most of the students do not like to read. They want to read books that look similar to books their peers are reading, instead of what they call baby books, the books that are at their reading level. The Desmond Cole books are written at an easier level, but they do not look as if they are. The students enjoy reading them and they do not feel embarrassed about reading them. They are practicing their reading and they are talking about what they are reading. It is exciting to me to watch students that don't want to read, who don't like to read, become readers, watching as they catch the reading spark. The feeling continues as these students start to recommend the books to their friends and when they eagerly tell me or others about the book.
