I want to start slowly with how to cast correctly, learning to reel in a fish. I have used magnets in place of hooks so it is safer until students are ready to use hooks. I am in the process of seeing what will work and what will not work with the magnets. I have some fish that are laminated with a magnet as well so kids will have success when casting and catching a fish. I plan on showing kid friendly videos that talk about fishing and how to properly remove a fish from a hook. My students were super excited as some kids already knew how to fish and some did not. I am hoping that my students who know how to fish will help others with their skills. This is what I want my students to work on is to be a good person and be helpful and kind to others as well as being a good role model. Our school core values are being safe, respectful and responsible. I see joy in students who love to help others and also see joy in students who are getting help from their peers. This is a great way to build relationships. \r\n\tMy next steps in the future for this project is to have a local game warden attend one of our school assemblies and talk about fishing as well as safety around water. I have spoken with my principal and I plan on taking classes to a local pond and have kids experience fishing so they can get a better understanding of how things work. Best of all I would like to have all my students catch a fish, it is so exciting to see kids catch their fish fish. This is such a wonderful opportunity for our students as well as our community.
