Your kind donations allowed us to purchase a new iPad and a protective case for the iPad.\r\n\r\nWe are located at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, MS. The new iPad has given our students with communication deficits access to many speech and language apps and activities that help facilitate speech and language development. Our speech and language impaired students are able to complete hands on interactive learning activities on the iPad.\r\n\r\nThe iPad also allows us to access Augmentative and Alternative Communication methods through the use of AAC apps and programs that give our nonverbal students a voice! Instead of students trying to push through hunger, asking to leave the room for water, or struggling to focus, they are able to stay engaged, comfortable, and ready to learn from bell to bell.\r\n\r\nWe keep the snacks and water in a designated area of the classroom, and students are able to quietly get what they need without interrupting instruction. That small act removed a barrier to learning and allowed them to fully participate in the lesson. It has also helped create a classroom culture where students feel cared for, safe, and supported.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were so excited and genuinely thankful. Several of them said things like, \"This is for us?\" They were amazed that people they have never met cared enough to help our classroom. \r\n\r\nBecause their basic needs are being met, we are able to spend more time focusing on instruction, collaboration, and hands-on learning. Before the college national championship football game, students were asked to vote for their favorite team. This past week, students were allowed to guess the number of mini rubber ducks in a container. It was a hit! The kids were very excited to get a chance to make their guesses. The students were thrilled when they first saw the spring chairs, and their excitement was contagious! These resources have made a remarkable difference in our daily classroom environment. The students are able to focus better during lessons and engage more actively in classroom activities, while also having a healthy outlet for their need to fidget. This has noticeably decreased up-and-down disruptions, creating a calmer and more productive learning space for everyone.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stood out was during our recent group activity. Students who typically struggle to remain seated for extended periods were able to participate fully and stay engaged with their peers. However, this year proved to be an attainable feat. Here's how it is benefiting my classroom:\r\nImproved Personal Hygiene and Health: Having access to hygiene products like soap, hand sanitizer, tissues, or deodorant helps students maintain their personal cleanliness, reducing the spread of germs and illnesses. This results in fewer absences due to sickness, which directly impacts their learning continuity.\r\n\r\nIncreased Comfort and Confidence: Students can feel more at ease when they have access to hygiene essentials. Knowing that they can freshen up during the day helps them feel more confident, particularly for older students who may be self-conscious about their appearance or body odor.\r\n\r\nFostering a Positive Environment: The Hygiene Hub creates a culture of care and responsibility. By encouraging students to take care of their hygiene, you also foster a sense of self-respect and respect for others. This can build a more supportive and inclusive classroom community.\r\n\r\nReduced Distractions: When students feel uncomfortable about their hygiene, it can distract them from their studies. By addressing these concerns, you can help them stay focused on learning instead of worrying about personal issues. This could lead to improved concentration and academic performance.\r\n\r\nTeaching Life Skills: The Hygiene Hub also offers an opportunity to discuss hygiene practices, responsibility, and self-care in class, teaching students important life skills. It's a subtle yet effective way to promote personal responsibility in a practical context.\r\n\r\nCreating a Safe, Non-Judgmental Space: Students who may not have access to hygiene products at home can benefit from the hub, reducing feelings of embarrassment or exclusion. It's an inclusive way to ensure that all students have what they need to feel comfortable and confident in their learning environment.","fullyFundedDate":1753321722371,"projectUrl":"project/fresh-focused-the-student-hygiene-hu/9207332/","projectTitle":"\"Fresh & Focused: The Student Hygiene Hub\"","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bush","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9833026_orig.jpg?crop=818,818,x0,y51&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742835643824","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9833026"},{"teacherId":3647707,"projectId":9258080,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support! One student who often struggled with focus has shown remarkable improvement after incorporating sensory exercises on the mats—he now returns to academic tasks with more calm and attention.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, the students were immediately curious and excited. Several of them couldn't wait to try out the mats during their sensory breaks. We've also used the room divider to create a more structured therapy area within the classroom, offering students a calm and private space to work on motor planning, body awareness, and calming routines. This setup has not only helped reduce overstimulation but has also made therapy time feel more special and purposeful.
