What might seem like a small resource has made a huge difference in our daily learning environment. Instead of students trying to push through hunger, asking to leave the room for water, or struggling to focus, they are able to stay engaged, comfortable, and ready to learn from bell to bell.\r\n\r\nWe keep the snacks and water in a designated area of the classroom, and students are able to quietly get what they need without interrupting instruction. That small act removed a barrier to learning and allowed them to fully participate in the lesson. It has also helped create a classroom culture where students feel cared for, safe, and supported.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were so excited and genuinely thankful. Several of them said things like, \"This is for us?\" They were amazed that people they have never met cared enough to help our classroom. \r\n\r\nBecause their basic needs are being met, we are able to spend more time focusing on instruction, collaboration, and hands-on learning. Student participation has increased each week! It has been a great way to kick off our Fridays on campus. Two popular questions we have asked students involved the mini rubber ducks! Before the college national championship football game, students were asked to vote for their favorite team. This past week, students were allowed to guess the number of mini rubber ducks in a container. It was a hit! The kids were very excited to get a chance to make their guesses. The student with the correct answer won a goody bag full of prizes from the items you all donated. Students demonstrated heightened interest in reading graphic novels and even apprehensive readers expressed excitement about our independent reading time.
