The cultural book project you donated to helped get books into our classroom with Native main characters. As a teacher, it is important to me to have books available to students that reflect their lives. Our school is made up primarily of Native students. Even though many reading curriculums are branching out to include literature excerpts from books with underrepresented authors or main characters, these rarely include Native Americans. \r\n\r\nStudents in my 4th grade class selected one of the picture books to share with a younger classroom. The practiced reads built fluency for the 4th graders. Fluency builds comprehension by alleviating working memory from decoding and allows more critical thinking and vocabulary building.
