The sensory supplies donated to our third-grade classroom have improved student engagement, focus, and emotional regulation. Every eight or nine-year old was thrilled to get a sensory sticker and chair band. Students have been grinning from ear to ear when it's his or her turn to use a wobble cushion, weighted blanket, or desk strap. \r\n\r\nDuring our mid-year January testing on computers, students must sit for about 4 hours over several days and answer challenging reading and math questions. We began using our new privacy folders at the beginning of testing and students rushed excitedly to grab a new folder without holes or marks. The wobble cushions provided an outlet for movement and restlessness while the two weighted blankets offered calming support for a couple anxious students. I've noticed students running their hands across the textured sensory stickers for tactile feedback while they work. Additionally, chair bands and desk bands enabled students to move while seated, supporting their need for physical activity without disrupting classmates.
