They are learning how to follow step-by-step directions, measure ingredients, practice kitchen safety, and work together as a team. These are skills that go far beyond the classroom and support their independence in everyday life.\r\n\r\nOne of the most special moments we've experienced was watching students successfully complete a simple recipe from start to finish. With support, they measured, mixed, and baked, then proudly shared their finished product with classmates and staff. The smiles on their faces and their sense of accomplishment were truly priceless.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were excited and curious. They were eager to explore the tools and couldn't wait to begin baking. The hands-on nature of the project immediately increased engagement, and students who are typically hesitant became more involved and confident.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we plan to expand these activities by practicing more complex recipes, reinforcing functional math and reading skills, and continuing to build independence through repetition and real-world application. Our goal is to help students gain confidence in their abilities and carry these skills into their homes and communities.\r\n\r\nThank you again for believing in our students and for making these meaningful learning experiences possible. I'm excited to see the difference in my students' experiences when we read it next year. This year, I read the Kindle version while sharing it to their screens. They enjoyed the book and got so much out of it, but it wasn't the same as having their own books. \r\n\r\nStudents learn kindness from this book. It's told from the perspective of Melody, a girl with cerebral palsy. They learn that Melody is pretty much the same as they are, even if she looks different to the world. \r\n\r\nThe experience with Pax was so different. Each student had their own copy. Each day, we read and discussed a chapter as a class, and then they had a choice of reading the next chapter independently or with a partner. It was wonderful to watch the room and see their reactions to the twists and turns and cliffhangers in the story, and for them to discover these themselves instead of as a group, as we did with Out of My Mind. \r\n\r\nWith Pax, my primary goal was go get students to think. They chose quotes that were meaningful to them, and responded to them. \r\n\r\nHere's an example:\r\n\r\n\"She learned that Pax had protected Gray, fed him, cleaned his wounds, for which she was grateful.\" p 159 \r\n\r\n\"I like that Gray's mate did not hurt Pax and instead was grateful for Pax for caring for Gray.\r\n\r\nMy students had many similar reactions to the kindness show in the book--Pax is a sad book in many ways, but my students learned the messages of hope and being true to yourself that were so important in the book. \r\n\r\nI can't thank you enough for improving my students' experiences with these wonderful books.","fullyFundedDate":1769793378522,"projectUrl":"project/help-6th-graders-discover-the-joy-of-rea/10063850/","projectTitle":"Help 6th Graders Discover the Joy of Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Caron-Greig","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/261437"},{"teacherId":4134857,"projectId":10011274,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting quality literature in our middle school classroom. They are resilient and creative, but like many students today, the \"gap year\" away from traditional schooling left a lasting mark.\r\n\r\nWhile they are eager to learn, many of them now struggle with the social-emotional side of academics. They find it difficult to start a problem when they aren't sure of the answer, and they often struggle to find the words to explain their mathematical logic to their peers. Moving a thought from their head onto paper has become their greatest hurdle.\r\n\r\nThe Project: Making Math Visible and \"Mistake-Friendly\"\r\nIn my classroom, I believe mathematics is about more than just calculating numbers—it is about visualizing relationships. To bridge the gap between abstract ideas and concrete understanding, my students need tools that allow them to model, graph, and—most importantly—change their minds.\r\n\r\nI am requesting a set of double-sided individual whiteboards (graphing on one side, blank on the other) along with cleaning cloths and storage totes.\r\n\r\nThese tools will transform our daily math block by:\r\n\r\nReducing \"Blank Page Anxiety\": Dry-erase boards provide a low-stakes environment where students feel safe taking risks. If they make a mistake, they can simply wipe it away and try again, rather than feeling defeated by a permanent mark on paper.\r\n\r\nImproving Communication: Students will use the blank side to map out their \"thinking steps\" and the graphing side to model how numbers relate on a coordinate plane or number line.\r\n\r\nFacilitating Collaboration: It is much easier for a student to show a partner their work on a raised whiteboard than to point at a small notebook. This encourages the social-emotional skill of working together.\r\n\r\nThe Long-Term Impact\r\nYour donation will do more than just provide supplies; it will provide clarity. These boards allow me to scan the room and instantly see who needs help, making my teaching more efficient and effective.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, the included storage totes and cloths ensure these materials stay in great shape. This isn't just a win for my current students—it's an investment that will benefit several future classes of mathematicians for years to come.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping my students find their voice in math!","fullyFundedDate":1635639503690,"projectUrl":"project/multiple-ways-to-show-student-thinking/5963254/","projectTitle":"Multiple Ways to Show Student Thinking","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Salzman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7737604"},{"teacherId":7815990,"projectId":9413484,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding our heat press project. This one piece of equipment has completely transformed what my students can do, not just what they can see on paper. My 6th graders are now able to design and create real products—shirts, tote bags, bookmarks, club swag—and actually bring their ideas to life. The first time they saw the heat press in action, the room went silent for about two seconds... then exploded with \"No way!\" and \"Can we try it?!\" It instantly turned into one of those rare classroom moments where every kid leans in at the exact same time.\r\n\r\nWe've already launched our club project where students create incentive items for peers who are reaching their AR (Accelerated Reader) goals. They're designing logos, choosing color palettes, and debating which styles will motivate other students to keep reading. Watching them take ownership like this—planning, creating, evaluating their own work—has been incredible. They're not just excited; they're proud. The heat press has given them the chance to produce something real and meaningful, and that sense of accomplishment shows.\r\n\r\nNext, students will be running a mini \"production team,\" rotating through roles like designer, quality control, and press operator. They'll continue making items for AR incentives, school spirit days, and eventually for our student-run club store. None of this would have been possible without your support. You didn't just buy a tool—you opened the door for creativity, collaboration, confidence, and authentic learning.
