I overhauled the collection this year because the library was opened for the first time for the high schools. Many of the books were outdated or at a developmentally inappropriate level (picture books, board books). Introducing these texts to my campus gives students a chance to explore topics that matter to them and that they are learning in class. One of the biggest questions that I get from students is what can they read that relates to the real world. Now, I have an even better answer for them. I'm excited to put displays together and STEM and guide students to make connections to other content areas. A group of 30 students who study Spanish and music in our title one school gathered in the historic auditorium of our building to listen to, sing, and dance the hybrid rhythms of cumbia from Colombia. Students watched as musicians introduced themselves, and then students joined in the dance and performance taking the instruments into their own hands to play, and holding hands with one another as they danced. Students who were timid and shy at first became active participants by the end of the period, flashing big smiles and coming away having learned about this great music.\r\n\r\nOur Spanish courses focus on the meeting of cultures, and this was the perfect compliment to our classroom discussions, bringing together our class in a way that can hardly be matched without it. Because of your support, the library was full all week. Between 40 and 80 students showed up for each event, stopping in during lunch and between classes to take part, spend time in the space, and check out what was happening.\r\n\r\nMany students left with books to take home. The titles we shared were high-interest books that students had asked for, which made a big difference. When they saw books that matched their interests, they were much more willing to pick one up and give it a try. Throughout the week, I watched students compare books with friends and talk about which stories seemed worth reading. Some students came in just to join an activity but ended up staying longer than they planned. A few who don't usually check out books took one home anyway. Others asked about upcoming book clubs and writing workshops and said they would come back.\r\n\r\nYour support helped make the library a place students wanted to spend time during the week. Your kindness helped turn a simple idea into one of the most exciting moments we've had in the library this year. Our students took the lead in creating a \"blind date with a book\" display and they truly made it their own. They wrapped the books in the gift bags and book-print tissue paper, wrote short teaser descriptions, and arranged the display throughout the library. The bookends became display stands so students could prop up the featured books and teasers.\r\n\r\nWatching them debate which teasers would make someone curious enough to check out a book was such a great moment. Some students ended up leaving with books they never would have picked up on their own, which is exactly what we hoped for. We are brainstorming different ways we can use the Instant Pot for more events during the spring. Students are already asking if they can help run another blind date with a book display later in the year.","fullyFundedDate":1768227526737,"projectUrl":"project/warm-up-with-a-good-book/9949500/","projectTitle":"Warm Up With a Good Book","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Guerrier","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4875990_272x272.png?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1531978111924","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/cguerrier"},{"teacherId":4875990,"projectId":10007272,"letterContent":"When the materials arrived, I opened the boxes during lunch so students could see everything. My student library interns immediately started planning how the Book of the Month display would look and asked their friends for help with promoting the book. They wanted to reuse the materials for the next Book of the Month display and chose the colors red and gold to match the book covers of the books that they chose for February and March, Finding Refuge and (S)kin. \r\n\r\nThey printed posters to promote the display and set them up around campus. One moment that stood out was watching a student who usually just comes in quietly between classes stop at the display, pick up the featured book, and sit down to read the first few pages. That same student checked it out the next day.\r\n\r\nNext, students plan to rotate the Book of the Month more consistently and track whether checkouts increase when the display changes. They also want to connect future displays to themes like women's history, Caribbean literature, and student recommendations. My goal is to gradually release even more responsibility to them so the space continues to reflect what students actually want to see. Additionally, the crochet blankets are slowly coming together! I cannot wait to see how the space is transformed with those additions.
