By introducing graphic novels, high-interest texts, and visually engaging books, we created a space where students—many of whom have struggled with reading—finally felt seen. These weren't just new books on shelves; they were invitations.\r\n\r\nStudents who once avoided reading are now picking up books on their own. They are talking about characters, making personal connections, and, most importantly, building confidence. For many, this is the first time they have experienced reading as something accessible and meaningful rather than frustrating or out of reach.\r\n\r\nThe shift has been visible not only in their engagement but also in their sense of identity. Through diverse stories and an art-through-activism lens, students are beginning to see themselves reflected in what they read. They are using stories as a way to express their thoughts, question the world around them, and connect with one another. Reading has become social, creative, and empowering.\r\n\r\nEven small moments have carried weight—students lingering by the shelves, recommending books to peers, or leaving thoughtful reflections on exit tickets. These moments signal a larger change: reading is no longer something they have to do; it's something they are choosing to do.\r\n\r\nThis project has helped build a classroom culture rooted in curiosity, inclusion, and possibility. It has reminded students that their voices matter and that stories—both the ones they read and the ones they tell—have power.\r\n\r\nThank you for supporting a vision that goes beyond literacy skills. This work is about helping students rediscover themselves as readers, thinkers, and creators. And for many of them, that journey has just begun.","fullyFundedDate":1768767702260,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-library-glow-up-art-activism/10034502/","projectTitle":"Classroom Library Glow-Up: Art, Activism, and the Joy of Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. KC Swain","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8495451_orig.jpg?crop=2248,2248,x0,y307&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1654879392373","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8495451"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_72029","usesÐǿմ«Ã½":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":183,"numTeachers":19,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":22,"percentIndigenous":2,"percentLatinx":51,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"10 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"9.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":52.9,"schoolId":72029,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Reynolds Learning Academy on @Ðǿմ«Ã½:","schoolName":"Reynolds Learning Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/reynolds-school-district-7/reynolds-learning-academy/72029"}
