While some students had been having some success looking at fungal, animal, and plant cells using their personal microscopes, many were struggling. With our new equipment, made possible by your generous contributions, all students were able to see more detail and identify what they were looking at with more confidence! This opened up a whole new world of discovery! \r\n\r\nThe pictures I uploaded show student explorations of bacteria and fungus that they obtained by sampling different surfaces in our classroom and culturing what was living there. Students took turns gathering around the microscope and screen looking at fungal mycelia and bacteria (and associations between the two) from their petri dishes. Students were able to point to areas of interest on the screen and discuss what they were seeing with each other and with me. \r\n\r\nThe students also participated in a lab where they explored the cells of aquatic plants. I had been hoping students would be able to see cytoplasmic streaming (the movement of chloroplasts inside plant cells), but everyone was having trouble finding anything using the higher magnifications on their student microscopes. I asked one student to see what he could find with our new microscope. He got to work and, within minutes, said, \"Ms. Plume, look! These are moving!\" He had found streaming chloroplasts and we were able to display them on our classroom SmartBoard for everyone to see! It was wonderful, and exactly what I'd hoped would happen.","fullyFundedDate":1725740013184,"projectUrl":"project/a-deep-dive-into-microscopic-diversity/8647480/","projectTitle":"A Deep Dive Into Microscopic Diversity","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Plume","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9654483"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_90852","usesÐǿմ«Ã½":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":159,"numTeachers":16,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":94,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"9.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.0,"schoolId":90852,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Fitler Academics Plus School on @Ðǿմ«Ã½:","schoolName":"Fitler Academics Plus School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/pennsylvania/philadelphia-city-school-district/fitler-academics-plus-school/90852"}
