Because of your generosity, my students have transitioned from being passive listeners to active creators. When the boxes of bright Astrobrights paper, sharp new scissors, and fresh glue sticks arrived, the room felt like it was charged with electricity. One of my students held up a pack of the \"Punchy Pastel\" paper and asked, \"We get to use the pretty paper for our math notes now?\" It has sparked a newfound pride in their work; they are no longer just filling out worksheets, they are building a personal portfolio of their own brilliance.\r\n\r\nWe are currently using these resources to tackle complex 5th-grade science and math concepts through interactive foldables. A specific moment that stands out was during our lesson on the water cycle. Instead of just looking at a diagram in a textbook, every student used the colored paper and scissors to create a 3D pop-up model in their notebooks. For my bilingual learners, this hands-on process is a game-changer. They were using their scissors to \"cut out\" evaporation and their glue sticks to \"anchor\" precipitation, which helped them internalize the vocabulary in both English and Spanish far more effectively than a lecture ever could.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for my students involve using our new TPT resources to dive into our \"Mistake Detective\" unit in mathematics. We will be creating interactive \"Trap Analysis\" flaps in our adventure notebooks where students will analyze common STAAR misconceptions. Your support has given them the tools to organize their thinking and the confidence to take risks in their learning. You haven't just provided school supplies; you've provided the \"magic wands\" that make my students feel like the scientists and mathematicians they are.","fullyFundedDate":1763593478853,"projectUrl":"project/igniting-curiosity-with-science-math-a/9655192/","projectTitle":"Igniting Curiosity With Science & Math Adventure Notebooks","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Woodard","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6216363_orig.jpg?crop=1794,1794,x18,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756341686583","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-redglasses"},{"teacherId":6216363,"projectId":9654991,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your incredible generosity in funding the Building Math Confidence, One Block at a Time project! As a teacher at the same elementary school I once attended, it means the world to me to provide my students with the high-quality resources they deserve. When the boxes arrived, my students were buzzing with excitement. They were especially drawn to the Power Pens and the Jumbo Magnetic Base Ten Blocks. One student even asked, \"Are these really for us to keep in our room?\" Seeing their faces light up made it clear that these aren't just tools; they are symbols of the investment you have made in their potential.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, we are currently using these resources to bridge the gap between abstract numbers and real-world understanding. During our small-group rotations, the Magnetic Base Ten Blocks have become a staple on my whiteboard. I recently used them to model decimal place value, and I watched the \"lightbulb moment\" happen for a student who had been struggling to understand regrouping. He was able to physically see me exchange a \"flat\" for ten \"rods,\" making the math visible and concrete. Meanwhile, other students are using the Power Pens and Ten Frames at their stations, receiving immediate feedback that builds their independence and stamina.\r\n\r\nThe next step for my students is to apply these hands-on skills to our upcoming unit on multi-step problem solving. We will be using the Train Your Brain kits to transition from basic computation to critical thinking and \"Math Detective\" work. My students and I are using these new resources to transform the way we track and celebrate academic growth. Specifically, we used the gumball machine as our primary celebration station following the NWEA MAP Growth assessment. We sat down together to compare their Beginning of Year scores to their Middle of Year results, and every student who met or surpassed their individual growth goal earned a special token to use at the machine. Seeing the students' faces light up as they realized their hard work translated into a tangible \"spin\" was a moment of pure math magic that shifted the energy of the entire room.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the reaction was nothing short of \"gum-believable!\" My students were buzzing with excitement, peering through the clear glass at the colorful gumballs and the capsules filled with squishies and bouncy balls. One student even mentioned that the machine made the classroom feel like a \"math carnival.\" This excitement has turned what used to be a high-stress data review into a joyful event. It has helped my bilingual learners take true ownership of their progress, as they now talk about their \"growth points\" with the same enthusiasm they have for the prizes inside the machine.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, the gumball machine will remain the centerpiece of our classroom motivation. Our next steps involve preparing for our upcoming math and science benchmarks. The students are already working hard on their \"Marathon Trackers,\" knowing that their next opportunity to spin the machine comes with our benchmark data review. We will also use it one final time for the End of Year NWEA MAP testing to celebrate a full year of perseverance. The children could hardly believe there were so many different cracker and chip varieties just for them. That moment alone showed me how meaningful your gift truly is.\r\n\r\nWe use the snacks every day during our learning blocks and small group instruction. After a morning of letter practice, counting games, and early writing, a short snack break helps my students refocus and reset. I've noticed that once they finish their snack, they return to the carpet calmer, more engaged, and better able to participate in activities like phonics games and number centers. \r\n\r\nRight now, we are working on recognizing letters and sounds while also learning to cooperate with classmates and follow routines. Thanks to your support, my students are better prepared to tackle these important skills each day.
