I'm here to give you an update of what utilizing these STEM materials looks like in our classroom!\r\n\r\nAs we had planned and hoped, starting their days out with a burst of creativity and thinking is a great way to break in my kiddos' school days. During the first 30 minutes of each day, students are charged with a challenge to create. Typically, these challenges are themed to match current content of what we are learning in science class, but sometimes they are themed to match the season or some special event happening.\r\n\r\nStarting their days with STEM is an extra incentive and motivational tool that helps with student engagement from the start. All the materials are being put to great use and my young new learners are having so much fun with everything we had in this project.\r\n\r\nThe fine motor items including the rice and all the containers and cutters are a huge hit during our free choice time. They love to dump the rice and try to cover their hands and bury some of the little treasures we have. They also love all the pattern blocks and animals that they can use on the light table. This lets them sort the items into shapes or colors. They think it's all play, but it's so much learning too.\r\n\r\nThank you again for supporting my young learners. My class loves reading and enjoy getting new books. So when these books came they were ready to dive into all the new books. I love that I was able to get read aloud and books that they can read independently or pair read with a partner. My students love the wobble chairs and now they are able to work while getting their wiggles out! With the wobble chairs at my small group table, I'm able to meet with up to 5 students at a time and instead of tapping or slouching in their chairs, they are able to wiggle and wobble on their stools! They love being able to spin on them and they think that coming to the back table to work with the teacher now is really cool! \r\n The red wobble seats for their chairs are also great! They saw them and said, \"Mrs. Flock, you have the coolest chairs in your room!\" With the funds contributed, I was able to purchase 5 wobble stools and 7 red wobble seats! They were thrilled to see the magnetic blocks, building cubes, colored pencils, coloring books, and the LCD tablets. (They have been a favorite for sure!) They could not believe it was all for them to use and enjoy. \r\n\r\nHaving the supplies and the materials motivates students to get to school early so they can enjoy it! \r\n\r\nEach morning, the students are given a \"challenge\" that gives them something to create. An example we have done is, \"Design something that you would use or take on a vacation!\". It has improved attendance, sparked curiosity, and allowed students to use their imaginations. \r\n\r\nThank you for seeing the value of creativity for my students this year and the students that I will serve in the future. They are having so much fun using these items to learn through play. They love to rotate to the different stations to use all the new materials. It is also great because since I teach Pre-K this is all new to them, so they have never used some of the items and it's so fun to see the excitement in their eyes.
