Our upper grade students all play band instruments, but they belong to the school. Many students save up all their good behavior points and participation points so they can \"purchase\" an instrument of their own. Not only do they get to play this instrument in class if they wish, but it is theirs to keep, even once they move on from our elementary school. Many will continue in music because they love it and have an instrument at home to practice on. This is significant for any music student, but for the students in our school, who are sometimes prevented from continuing in music because of the cost, it is priceless.\r\n\r\nI wish that I could include video and audio of the students playing these clarinets and trombone. You would be impressed at how much they learn and the progress they make when they have their own instrument. Immediately, the entire class was awake, everyone was engaged, talkative, and being creative. \r\n\r\nAs a teacher, it's always exciting to watch students learn when they don't know it's happening. In this game in particular there is a critic that has to judge the other student's monsters and award points. This could go one of two ways, and I was thrilled to walk around the room hearing things like \"I really like your dinosaur tail, but he added spikes to his so I'm giving him the points.\" Or, \"Your fangs look so cool, will you show me how to draw them?\" Students were being positive, helpful, and they were giggling with each other instead of at each other. They arrived this month and I installed the whole system in my classroom last week. The students quickly noticed the new system when they entered my room and started asking questions about when we get to start recording. I told them that we will start using it in band over the next two weeks and definitely for our concert that is the second week of December. Once the box of supplies showed up, students who had used them before weren't even willing to finish the projects we were in the middle of because they were so eager to get their hands on them! I had to rearrange several lesson plans so that everyone had a chance with them. I think a fan favorite was the 6th graders synth wave art that I included pictures of. They were so proud of themselves, and it's on the bucket list for the younger grades for when they get older.\r\n\r\nThe daubers also helped our 3rd graders out of their comfort zone. Most students are used to working on the traditional 8.5x11 size paper, but with those new daubers, we decided to make some poster sized neon versions of our mascot which the students couldn't get enough of. It was a great test of their hand eye coordination on such a large scale. \r\n\r\nThe supply organizer has made a world of difference just in the way our classroom runs. There's a place for sharp and unsharpened pencils so I don't have to listen to the dreaded sharpener during class. There's a place for every extra supply the students need so I don't have to go searching for it in the middle of class. This allows them to solve their own problems, and it's helped our class run so much more efficiently.\r\n\r\nThe spirographs, tempera cakes, and wikki stix have made for wonderful lessons multiple times with multiple grades.
