My students love to read during the thirty minutes of independent reading that follows lunch recess each day.\r\n\r\nMy students were very eager to get their hands on these new books. One student who is reading Bree Boyd is a Legend kept laughing during reading time and later said that the book is quite funny. They are eager to read the other book by the author, Ellie Engle Saves Herself. Another student is reading The Curse of Eelgrass Bog said this is an excellent book. It's a big departure from many of the other books he has read this year. My hope with this collection of books is to help kids see themselves and understand their world a little better. I am glad that we could update our classroom library with more books and audiobooks featuring lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender characters.\r\n\r\nI know that my students become stronger readers by reading independently. According to one student who is reading Linus and Etta Could Use a Win, \"Everyone should read this book!\" Another student has already read Ellen Outside the Lines. Then it sat facing out on our bookshelf for one day and is already in the hands of another reader. I read Melissa by Alex Gino to my class last spring. It's about a transgender girl who is trying to understand herself and share who she is with the rest of the world. I plan to read another book by that author this spring. Already, Outsider Kids has a waiting list taped inside the front cover with fifteen names written on it. This is clearly a popular book since almost everyone has already read Parachute Kids, the first book in the series. Rebound also is being read and passed around between the kids who already read the first two books by Kwame Alexander in the series, The Crossover and Booked. The Trouble with Heroes is one that I read over the summer and, as I expected, it already has an eager reader.\r\n\r\nI know that my students become stronger readers by reading independently. My third grade students are thrilled to have this collection of new graphic novels. My students love to read during the thirty minutes of independent reading that follows lunch recess each day.\r\n\r\nI was excited to share these new graphic novels last week. I held up each book and read the titles and blurbs yesterday. My students were very excited, too. Every new book was quickly snatched up! Students seem particularly excited to read Frizzy, Beetle & the Hollowbones, and Ghost Book. The Crossover is a book we already have in our room in regular written form. It's a novel-in-verse. Students who had read that previously were eager to read the graphic novel version, and it is already in the hands of the third reader who will start reading it on Monday. The student who is reading Curlfriends walked over to me and said, \"I think this book was written just for me.\" So, students are into these books!\r\n\r\nGraphic novels are great for keeping students' attention with their strong images and fast pace. They help create connections between words and images to deepen students' understanding of the storyline. A High Five for Glenn Burke, about the San Francisco Giants baseball player, is being read and has a waiting list six kids long on a post-it tucked inside the front cover. Maybe it will be a spark for a kid who is LGBTQ and plays sports to feel more welcome or for one of my students to be more welcoming to others on the field. Students are also reading The Civil War of Amos Abernathy, Just Lizzie, and Too Bright to See. I read Melissa by Alex Gino to my class earlier this spring. Students highlighted what they thought was important in their article, identified themes within their highlighting, and are currently taking notes by paraphrasing.
