We are lucky right now because the learning specialists and the Instructional Assistants have a room to work with students if our students need a pull-out rather than a push-in setting. It was a former classroom so it is spacious. Inside the room, we have several learning spaces that could all be used at once. If you were to visit you would see students wearing noise reduction headphones, sitting on the wiggle seats, squeezing fidgets, using the sand timers, and reading softly with the whisper phones. Not only that, we can lend materials to other classes. Each year the needs can be surprisingly different. Teachers have borrowed phonics phones, wobbly cushions, and headphones. It is an amazing feeling to be able to say, \"We have those! Here you go!\" Thank you so much! Each Friday my students enjoy 30 minutes of Free Choice time if they have completed all classwork and homework. This is a time for drawing, reading, games, building and more. \r\n\r\nEver since we received our new blocks have been put to great use! Students have built castles with spiral staircases and ramps where they race ping pong balls. Other students have challenged themselves to see who can build the tallest tower. \r\n\r\nJust as I had originally hoped, these blocks are consistently being used by small groups of students collaboratively while others prefer to build alone. The box was large and there are plenty of materials for the students to share. \r\n\r\nIn the upcoming weeks we are planning to use the blocks in design challenges and math stations. I can not emphasize enough how grateful we are to have our own copies of the books to preview and plan with. When my second grade group saw we had the same Cinderella book (In 2nd grade, students read multiple versions of the tale Cinderella and reflect upon how the culture, or setting, of the story influences the plot, setting, and characters) that their classroom had, they immediately informed me of this fact and proceeded to tell me excitedly about what they had read in class. Our task was to fill out a graphic organizer comparing two of the books. Having the books to refer to made the task happily doable. In the 5th grade, we are reading \"Seedfolks\" where each chapter is told by a different person in the community. In 5th grade we are teaching the students to back up their thinking with evidence. Having copies of the book to refer to is essential in this work. As well, having the books for our first graders as they explore themes of friendship and the chapter book Dyamonde Daniel for our striving third graders have also been essential. In short, we could not be nearly as successful without your generous donation. We received the workbooks right before school ended. I gave workbooks or copies of the workbooks to a number of my striving students for summer enrichment. My families were very receptive about having smart summer work being sent home to reinforce skills and the fact that it was in a smart, easy to comprehend workbook made it much easier for them to reinforce the learning at home. Now the new school year has started and I am once more giving my students these workbooks to reteach, practice and reinforce concepts. First, I printed beautiful pictures of my students and they were beyond delighted seeing their images during class. We have been working on understanding \"thoughts and feelings.\" For example, how we all have thoughts (easy to understand), but that sometimes our thoughts are not the same (harder to understand). With the students' pictures, I added some empty thought bubbles which helped some of my youngest students to grasp this concept. I also overheard my colleague teaching one of her students about compound sentences. I was able to quickly print a helpful resource (the \"FANBOYS\") and some exercises which helped the student successfully understand what a compound sentences are and how to construct them. It is such a tremendous gift to have this tool in our Learning Center and everyone is so excited to be able to personalize curriculum and to print necessary materials in color. Color helps our students. Having the technology to quickly respond to our students' needs makes is powerful. Thank you so much! When a student tells me that they \"don't like\" math or that it's \"confusing,\" I remind them again and again that math is all about a \"clear picture\" and if one's math picture is not \"clear\" it just means that we need to try another way to understand the concept. Having simple manipulatives (dice, coordinate graphing grid, clocks, dominoes, frames, items to count, etc.) are the best tools! They are tried and true, they are only dependent on teaching the child HOW they might make their picture clear and giving direct instruction on doing so. Thank you for the tools. They are the best. I don't need bells and whistles and neither do the kids. They need explanation, time, respect of process, and smart manipulatives to illustrate concepts. As fluent readers, we can take so many things for granted...For example, learning consonants sounds like /m/ for /t/ and identifying short vowels...it's automatic for us, but when the code starts to crack and the hard work of learning /m/ and /t/ and blending sounds with vowel sounds \"clicks\" for a striving reader, it is so powerful. I too remember reading about \"Dan\" and \"Ann\" and their dog \"Sam.\" There was nothing simplistic about it. \r\nThe other day my student who has been learning their sounds all year, found they could actually read one of the Tom and Ricky series books! At first they were intimidated to try, but when they saw they could also read a \"sophisticated\" big kid's book, they were all smiles. My Kinder student who has been working on learning her letters all year finally blended some of them into words with the decodable. With the materials you donated, I am reminded of determined patience and relentless teaching at the child's learning zone. Thank you so much for these materials.
