The moment our students stepped outside and saw the brand-new tricycles and traffic signs, their eyes widened and cheers filled the playground. Some students immediately ran to touch the handlebars or the wheels, while others carefully examined the traffic signs, pointing to or flipping the switch on the traffic light as it changed from red, to yellow, and then to green. For most of our preschoolers, this was not just an exciting time of getting new equipment or toys, but it was also a moment of possibility. They felt capable AND included. The reason for that is that the tricycles are very accessible and easy to use, even for the smallest child in the playground. Imagine if you were a child with special needs and had difficulty pedaling, when suddenly you could simply ride with your peers in the back? Even if they could not explain their joy yet, they were thrilled to go with their friends!\r\n\r\nThe tricycles include: one scooter board (which is operated by sitting flat on it with legs out and pedal with hands), one police car, one fire truck, one school bus, and one taxi with a bench for a backseat. The taxi has enough seats for three students at a time, which they loved right away! We have been using our new equipment for a few weeks now, and all preschool teachers have noticed powerful growth in motor skills. Many students are pedaling with strength and coordination, which is a necessary skill to make these tricycles move when taking on passengers. We turn every ride into teachable moments, such as stopping at a \"stop\" sign or a \"red light\" or going as fast as possible using the \"one way\" sign or \"green light\".\r\n\r\nSocially and emotionally, the impact has been meaningful because our students are learning to follow rules and be safe with other peers. We practice turn-taking and problem-solving skills daily. When our students are out in the playground, they are not just taking risks, they are taking responsibility. Injuries may occur, as a student falls off the tricycle or another crashes, but we are building a sense of community where we check-in with peers. We are learning the ability to express, \"I'm O.K.!\" or ask, \"Are you hurt?\". These are real-life social skills that will strengthen every day just by playing with our tricycles. It is essentially impossible to replicate these experiences indoors with a worksheet or table-top activity.\r\n\r\nOur next steps involve adapting our lessons to more individual skills when playing outdoors. While some students may need extra support with motor planning, such as pedaling and even just hanging on while riding in the back of a tricycle, other students may need more advanced challenges. This includes fun stuff like obstacle courses (e.g., going around traffic cones, following every road sign instruction) or a race to the finish line.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, our outdoor times have become a place where successful learning experiences occur for our students. Our new, engaging tricycles and road signs have shifted our teaching approach to more hands-on activities where we promote gross motor, social-emotional and cognitive skills.\r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of our hearts: Thank you!","fullyFundedDate":1766709915250,"projectUrl":"project/growing-muscles-and-minds/9851632/","projectTitle":"Growing Muscles and Minds!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Campos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3357205_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1761606964388","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3357205"},{"teacherId":611301,"projectId":9788373,"letterContent":"It's been awesome having this Teachers Pay Teachers gift card to be able to purchase the materials needed for both students and me.
