Your kindness has truly transformed our classroom in ways that are hard to fully capture in words.\r\n\r\nFrom the very first chapter, my students were completely drawn into the story. They gasped at the plot twists, laughed at the clever humor, and leaned in closer during the suspenseful moments. The vivid characters and imaginative storytelling sparked rich conversations and powerful predictions. Watching them experience the magic of a truly captivating book has been one of the highlights of my year.\r\n\r\nOne unforgettable moment came when the main character discovers the witches' convention at his hotel and witnesses the Grand High Witch reveal herself. As I read that chapter aloud—with dramatic pauses and character voices—you could have heard a pin drop. Every single student was frozen in anticipation, eyes wide, completely immersed in the story. It was one of those rare, beautiful classroom moments teachers treasure.\r\n\r\nSince finishing the novel, many of my students have eagerly searched for other books by this author, hungry for more stories. That excitement—the spark that turns into a lifelong love of reading—is a direct result of your generosity.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, my students didn't just read a book. They experienced it. They felt it. They discovered the joy of getting lost in a story. Thank you for giving them that gift. Our school district is the second most diverse district in the nation, and many of our students are immigrants from other countries. The students could identify with many parts of Esperanza's experience! She learns many new skills throughout the book, but mostly, she learns about herself. Her journey- going from a wealthy socialite in Mexico to a migrant farm worker in California- is written in a way that students can truly connect with Esperanza's struggles and triumphs. \r\n\r\nIn our classroom, I read most of each chapter as a read-aloud with students following along in their own copy of the book. When I get to a point near the end of the chapter that has enraptured the students, I will stop reading and have them continue independently or with a partner. Afterwards, students answer comprehension and vocabulary questions about what they have read. I also like to incorporate art into our classroom, so while we were reading, we made string dolls like Esperanza did in the book as well as pinatas. Thank you again for the opportunity to engage in this fantastic novel with our students. This kind of excitement warms my heart!\r\n\r\nYour donation has allowed all of my students, regardless of their reading ability, to read along and discuss the novel. We read our chapter books as a class, so everyone can enjoy reading a chapter book at grade level. Many of my student do not have the ability to read chapter books of this level and it makes them feel left out.\r\n\r\nDuring our read aloud, we work on asking and answering questions, making predictions, and annotating all the fiction elements. By doing this as a whole class, my struggling readers get to hear the ideas and thoughts from the higher readers which in turn, helps the struggling readers with their comprehension. We even brought in a shovel and had the students attempt to dig a hole the same size as the holes the characters in the novel were digging. They were shocked at how difficult it can be to dig a hole- especially in November! We learned all about the judicial system, and students were able to make their own judgments about real court cases. We even did a mock trial so the students could truly understand the concepts being discussed!\r\n\r\nReading this novel with our students has been a wonderful experience that I will not soon forget (and I hope they won't either!). When we started reading the book, we only had four copies of the novel, but thanks to your donations, by the time we were on Chapter 3, every student had a copy of the book in their hands. We are extremely grateful!\r\n\r\nThe fifth-graders who read this novel over the last few weeks have been immersed in the world of science fiction created by the incredible Madeline L'Engle. They were fascinated by the concept of \"It\", the mind-controling brain that controlled all the people on the planet Camazotz \"for their own good\". They also loved the beasts at the end of the story who were not able to speak, but were able to communicate through feelings. These outside-of-the-box concepts kept the students wanting to know more about the story!\r\n\r\nThe students greatly enjoyed the more realistic pieces of the novel as well. They identified closely with the main character, Meg, as well as her friend Calvin and little brother Charles. In the story, Meg grapples with insecurity, anger outbursts, and the absence of her father. Our students were able to recognize some of their own struggles through these characters which led to some in-depth discussions in our classrooms. We talked about abandonment, feeling outcast, emotions that get the best of us, and a host of other topics. \r\n\r\nAfter completing the novel study, last week the entire fifth-grade was able to attend a play of A Wrinkle in Time at a local arts theater. We all had a wonderful time, and it was the perfect way to culminate this novel study. Reading this book with the students sparked a love of reading and has encouraged them to read more! There are four more books in the Wrinkle in Time series, and our school library can't keep them in stock because our fifth-graders keep checking them out.
