During our light and darkness unit, my students have been using the light tables, which have truly opened the door to deeper exploration, along with a variety of hands-on materials to investigate in ways that feel both playful and powerful. One moment that truly stood out was watching students place different objects on the light table and notice how each one looked completely different when illuminated. They compared colors, textures, and shapes, holding materials up, layering them, and excitedly sharing what they discovered with one another. What began as simple exploration quickly turned into rich, child-led learning filled with curiosity, problem-solving, and joy.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, their reactions were pure wonder. Some children quietly observed, taking it all in, while others jumped right in, placing materials on the light table and experimenting with how they changed in the light. It created a classroom atmosphere filled with energy and discovery. For many of my students, these materials opened the door to new ways of learning, allowing them to touch, see, and truly experience concepts that might otherwise feel abstract.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we are building on this excitement by connecting our learning to the real world. Students are beginning to explore how light helps us in everyday life, whether it is during nighttime routines, staying safe in the dark, or even camping experiences. The students often tell me they are hungry and cannot focus or pay attention to what is being asked of them as 4th graders. The snacks allow them to eat quickly, so they are not hungry and can continue their activities and lessons.\r\n\r\nThis school year has been an eye-opener as we've realized the extent of hunger issues among our students and their families. It's not just hunger, but a desperate need for food that some of our students are facing. They come to school hungry, and not only that, they ask for food to take home.
