They were thrilled to have choices in how and where they learn. \r\n\r\nOne memorable moment was seeing students settle into their cushions with books in hand, completely immersed and excited to read. \r\n\r\nStudents now use these resources every day, especially during independent reading time. The reading cushions have increased my students' enthusiasm for independent reading. The wobbly chairs have also been a huge success at desks, giving students the movement they need to stay attentive while working. \r\n\r\nBeyond comfort and flexibility, these new options have helped students practice important skills like sharing, taking turns, and respecting each other's choices.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we will continue to love and use these flexible seating options every day. When they were in 1st grade, we used the primary version so now they were able to explore a multitude of new designs. At first they followed the guide, but as they got more comfortable with the supplies, they were able to begin to build their own creations.\r\n\r\nThe watercolors were a great fit for my neurobiology unit. One of the activities is creating neurographic art. Each student focuses on an problem and they write it on the back of their watercolor paper. We use sharpies to create the lines. These represent the path to solving their problems. Not all solutions are linear. This activity is quiet and introspective. It calms the mind and allows the students to reflect. Even students who are usually hesitant become eager to participate, ready to read, write, erase, and try again without the pressure of making a permanent mistake.\r\n\r\nOnce the materials are in their hands, engagement skyrockets. Students love the quick pace and interactive nature of using dry erase boards to show their thinking, and flashcards turn practice into something that feels more like a game than work. Their current favorite \"game\" is Beat Your Score, where they get a minute to get as many answers correct and then another minute to beat that score. They enjoy working with each other, building both confidence and fluency in a low-stakes way. The ability to immediately correct and revise their answers helps reinforce learning while keeping frustration low.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for my students are to build independence and deepen their use of these tools. They will begin creating their own flashcards based on skills we're learning, which encourages ownership and reinforces understanding. With dry erase reading passages, they'll move up in levels as they become proficient at answering questions. The classroom was excited to organize work with new folders, since the old ones were ripped. Batteries ensured that our classroom flashlights stayed functional during Flashlight Friday, an exciting time to read. The addition of a camera was especially exciting—students loved documenting their work, capturing moments with the classroom pet, and creating visual records of their learning.
