Through these texts, students are practicing key literacy skills such as making inferences, identifying themes, analyzing characters, and supporting their ideas with evidence from the text. Just as importantly, they're building confidence and stamina as readers. Because the collection includes a variety of genres and reading levels, I'm able to meet students where they are and challenge them appropriately, helping each student grow at their own pace.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active, engaging process. Students participate in small group discussions, partner reading, and independent reading time, where they can explore books that truly interest them. We use strategies like annotating, asking questions, and making personal connections to deepen comprehension. The new books have made it possible to create a more vibrant reading environment—one where students are excited to pick up a book and share their thoughts with others.\r\n\r\nSeveral students, in particular, have really connected with these new texts. Some who were previously reluctant readers are now eagerly reaching for books and asking for more time to read. Others have found characters and stories they relate to, which has sparked meaningful conversations and a stronger sense of belonging in our classroom. Seeing students light up as they discover stories that resonate with them has been incredibly rewarding, and it's all thanks to your generous support.","fullyFundedDate":1768058437983,"projectUrl":"project/fueling-focus-creativity-and-learning/9988557/","projectTitle":"Fueling Focus, Creativity, and Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McWhinnie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5646205_orig.jpg?crop=1944,1945,x0,y330&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1634341947343","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5646205"},{"teacherId":10411489,"projectId":10038353,"letterContent":"Heartfelt Thanks for Your Support!\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, the vision for Empowering Autistic Learners: A Multi-Sensory Approach to School Success has moved from a concept to a vibrant reality. By bringing in titles that truly reflect my students' interests, the \"chore\" of reading has turned into a choice. We have seen firsthand that when a child is genuinely curious about the story in their hands, their focus sharpens and their comprehension naturally soars. They aren't just decoding words anymore; they are connecting with characters and ideas.\r\n\r\nA Game-Changer for State Testing\r\nThe headphones have been an absolute lifesaver. With these resources, I've been able to provide more intentional, hands-on support for students as they navigate a wide range of emotions.\r\n\r\nThe books have been especially powerful in small grief groups, giving students a safe and relatable way to process loss. Through stories, they are able to see their feelings reflected, build language around their experiences, and feel less alone in what they are going through.\r\n\r\nFidgets have become an essential tool for many students who need support with emotional regulation. When students feel overwhelmed, these tools give them a quiet, appropriate outlet to release energy and refocus, allowing them to return to learning more calmly and confidently.\r\n\r\nWeighted stuffed animals have been incredibly comforting for students experiencing anxiety. Having something tangible to hold provides a sense of security and grounding, helping students feel safe enough to open up, participate, or simply take a moment to reset.\r\n\r\nBreathing buddies have also been a favorite among students. They offer a concrete, engaging way to practice calming strategies like deep breathing. Students are not only learning these skills, but actually applying them in moments when they need them most.\r\n\r\nOverall, these supplies have helped create a more supportive and responsive counseling environment where students feel empowered to understand and manage their emotions. Students who were once not motivated to participate in the program started to read and test every day. I was also able to challenge my more capable students to read chapter books and higher reading level books and find that they can be successful at the 3rd and 4th grade reading level also. Comprehension is assessed through independent reading/testing for most students. Self pride at earning a passing score of 80-100% and gaining points on their record was evident. \r\nIn addition to the books, the students were thrilled to use the new hand-held magnifying glasses in science when they arrived. These books support foundational reading skills such as fluency, decoding, and comprehension, while also helping students understand story elements like characters, problem and solution, and sequence of events. The graphic novel format is especially powerful for developing readers, as it allows them to use illustrations to support meaning and build confidence as readers.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading looks joyful, interactive, and student-centered. These resources have made a meaningful difference in the daily experiences of my students. They provide not only an engaging way to learn but also a comforting and supportive environment where each child—especially those with special needs—can thrive. Your investment in these tools has had a direct and positive impact on student well-being and success.\r\n\r\nSensory materials play a vital role in helping students relax and decompress after academic tasks. Following structured lessons, many students, particularly those who may feel overwhelmed more easily, benefit from the opportunity to engage with hands-on, calming activities that allow their minds and bodies to reset. Whether it's through tactile exploration, movement-based tools, or creative play, these materials give students a much-needed break that ultimately helps them return to learning more focused and ready.\r\n\r\nIn addition to relaxation, sensory materials are essential for supporting emotional regulation. This is especially important for students with special needs, who may require additional support in managing their feelings. These tools offer safe and constructive ways to process emotions, reduce anxiety, and regain a sense of control. Over time, I have seen students grow more confident in understanding and managing their emotions, which positively influences both their academic and personal development.\r\n\r\nAnother powerful benefit of sensory materials is the sense of accomplishment students experience when building and creating. For students with diverse learning needs, these hands-on successes are incredibly meaningful. Whether they are constructing structures, solving problems, or experimenting with different materials, they gain confidence through tangible achievements. These moments reinforce perseverance and encourage a growth mindset that carries over into other areas of learning.\r\n\r\nFinally, sensory materials foster the development of social skills as students work together and share experiences. Inclusive, collaborative play allows all students—including those with special needs—to practice communication, cooperation, and respect for one another. These shared experiences help build meaningful connections, strengthen peer relationships, and create a welcoming, supportive classroom community for everyone.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your support and commitment to enriching our students' learning environment. Instead of struggling with numbers on a page, students now physically compare sizes to master equivalent fractions. The **bean bags** have introduced a \"Kinesthetic Challenge\" zone, where students toss bags to select denominators or solve multiplication facts, keeping energy high and math anxiety low.\r\nOur **mobile and individual whiteboards** have shifted the classroom culture toward a \"growth mindset.\" On the large mobile board, student leaders model their problem-solving strategies for peers, while individual boards allow for low-stakes practice and instant feedback. These PBIS rewards and sensory tools are truly making a difference in the classroom. Motivating items like Pluffle Playfoam, Gears Super Set, and Mind Magnet World blocks inspire students to stay focused and put forth their best effort. Sensory supports—such as the calm down bottles, LED light-up toys, Wiggle Wobble Feet, and balance discs—give students the tools they need to calm themselves and re-engage in learning. PBIS rewards have also been highly effective. Students are especially motivated by earning Scooby Snacks and Lay's chips, which they've creatively nicknamed \"the Golden Chips.\" This has added an extra layer of excitement and pride in making positive choices and following expectations throughout the day. Overall, these resources are creating a calm, structured, and inclusive classroom where students feel supported and motivated to succeed.\r\n\r\nThe boxes of donated items came in over a period of three weeks. When we introduced the materials through unboxing celebrations, the student reactions were incredibly joyful and heartfelt. They waited with anticipation, and as each item was revealed, they expressed genuine excitement—cheering, clapping, and exclaiming things like, \"Oh my gosh, that's so awesome!\" Some students hugged each other in excitement, and a few even became emotional, expressing gratitude and happiness saying \"thank you so much\". It was a powerful moment that showed just how meaningful these supports are to them.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue building independence in both their learning and self-regulation.
