Many of my students struggle with a continuum of engagement. However, when they used the \"Magnetic Sequencing Learning Rods,\" they didn't want to stop writing. I created a first, then, next, and last template to help them create their sequential story. The four-step magnetic story rods accurately kept the students on task. \r\n\r\nThe four domains of our federally mandated WIDA Access testing are Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Reading. I was able to incorporate all four domains with this resource. The students wrote their sequential story and read it aloud to the group, thus practicing their speaking skills. Because reading is difficult, they often are very reluctant to read. I also teach many students who suffer from ADHD and find it very difficult to get comfortable in a desk seat and to be able to stay focused, especially when they're uncomfortable. As a result, reading is often a \"forced\" assignment and reading skills aren't as strong as they could be. There often isn't a love of reading. Rather, it's a dreaded assignment.\r\n\r\nMy goal is to help young students develop a love of reading. I want their world to be opened up to all of the wonderful books and other text that can entertain and expand their knowledge and world. I decided that finding some fun, comfortable seating would help encourage my students to want to get comfy with a good book. When my students walked in and saw these new seats, they got so excited. They couldn't wait to use them. \r\n\r\nThe seats are still a favorite place to sit and read. Even my reluctant readers get excited to sit in one of these seats and read a book. We studied Roy Lichenstein and made clay onomatopoeias. It was so much fun! \r\n\r\nFirst-fourth learned how to attach pieces of clay to each other and the importance of slipping and scoring.
