While the joy of reading is something we all understand, the process of teaching students how to truly engage with books involves a wide range of skills that may be less visible from the outside. I'm excited to share a glimpse into what that looks like in our classroom.\r\n\r\nWith these new texts, students are developing far more than just basic reading ability. They are learning how to think critically about what they read—making predictions, asking questions, and drawing connections between the text and their own experiences. We are also focusing on vocabulary development, comprehension strategies, and the ability to identify themes, characters' motivations, and the author's purpose. These are foundational skills that help students become thoughtful, independent readers.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an active and collaborative experience. You might see students gathered in small groups, discussing a character's choices or debating what might happen next. Others may be reading quietly, jotting down notes or reflecting in their journals. We also spend time reading aloud together, which allows us to model fluency and bring stories to life as a community. There's a wonderful energy in the room—curiosity, excitement, and sometimes even laughter as students connect with the stories.\r\n\r\nThere are a few students in particular who have truly come alive with these new books. One student, who was previously hesitant to participate, now eagerly raises their hand to share insights about the characters. Another has discovered a love for a specific genre and can often be found recommending books to classmates. Watching students find their book—the one that sparks their interest and confidence—is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching.\r\n\r\nYour support makes these moments possible. By helping us bring engaging, high-quality texts into the classroom, you are opening doors for students to discover not only the joy of reading, but also their own voices and ideas.\r\n\r\nThank you for being such an important part of our learning community.","fullyFundedDate":1768105676889,"projectUrl":"project/yay-third/9993973/","projectTitle":"Yay Third!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Stultz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9931601"},{"teacherId":8164607,"projectId":9986666,"letterContent":"Thank you tons for your generosity! We use it during whole-group reading, when introducing new sight words and blends, and for both the stories I read aloud and the stories students read together. Because of the large display and height of the easel, every student can clearly see the book and follow along with the text. This has made a huge difference in engagement and participation.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the easel set up with a big book displayed, they were immediately excited. They noticed how easy it was to see the words and pictures, even from the back of the carpet. Several students commented that they could \"read it better\" and were eager to come up and point to sight words or blends we were practicing. It instantly made our reading time feel more interactive and focused.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we will continue using the easel to introduce new phonics skills, practice blending sounds, and highlight sight words within authentic texts. Students will also take turns coming up to lead parts of the reading, reinforcing their confidence and fluency. This resource has truly strengthened our literacy instruction by making learning visible and accessible to every child in the room. In our classroom, art is not confined to paper and pencil; it is an exploration of multiple mediums, techniques, and creative problem-solving processes that help students build confidence, critical thinking skills, and collaboration. Access to quality materials allows students to experiment with color theory, design principles, measurement, and craftsmanship in meaningful, hands-on ways. When students work with paint, wood panels, brushes, sealants, and design tools, they are not only creating art—they are developing perseverance, planning skills, and pride in producing something tangible. These experiences strengthen both artistic ability and real-world skills such as budgeting materials, following sequential steps, and revising work based on feedback. Without adequate supplies, opportunities for exploration become limited, and learning shifts from immersive and engaging to theoretical and constrained. Ensuring that we have the materials necessary for our projects directly impacts student motivation, participation, and achievement.\r\n\r\nOne of our most impactful initiatives is our class barn quilt project, inspired by the tradition of Barn Quilt Trail. Through this project, students design and paint large wooden quilt squares that celebrate local heritage, geometry, and personal expression. The barn quilts are more than art pieces—they are interdisciplinary learning tools that connect mathematics, history, and visual arts. Students apply concepts such as symmetry, fractions, measurement, and spatial reasoning while also learning about the cultural significance of quilt patterns and community storytelling. The supplies required for this project—wood boards, primer, exterior paint, brushes, tape, rulers, and sealant—are essential for producing high-quality, durable pieces. These finished barn quilts are then sold or displayed as part of our fundraising efforts, generating revenue that allows us to continue offering diverse art experiences throughout the year. The funds raised are reinvested directly into purchasing new materials so students can explore different mediums such as acrylic painting, mixed media, printmaking, and three-dimensional design.\r\n\r\nBy supporting the purchase of supplies for projects like our barn quilts, you are investing in sustainable creativity. The impact extends far beyond a single assignment; it creates a cycle of opportunity. Students gain hands-on experience, produce meaningful artwork, and help generate funds that keep our program thriving. This model teaches entrepreneurship, responsibility, and community engagement alongside artistic technique. It empowers students to see their creativity as valuable and capable of making a real-world impact. Reliable access to materials ensures that every student, regardless of background, can fully participate and experience the joy of creating something lasting and significant. When we have the necessary supplies, we are not just teaching art—we are cultivating confidence, resilience, and a lifelong appreciation for creative expression.","fullyFundedDate":1767977597361,"projectUrl":"project/from-clay-creations-to-colorful-quilts/9986587/","projectTitle":"“From Clay Creations to Colorful Quilts”","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. H.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5454233_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1528528375926","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/humeckyart"},{"teacherId":9361822,"projectId":9990273,"letterContent":"My students were so excited when they saw the packages from my project come in.
