During dramatic play, students have been using the Chinese breakfast and dim sum food set to role-play restaurant scenarios, practice oral language, and strengthen social skills. One of my favorite moments was watching students collaborate in the dramatic play center, taking turns as chefs and customers while using new vocabulary they learned from our books.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate and contagious. They were especially thrilled by the play food and the vibrant Hispanic Heritage Month flags, which helped them feel proud to see different cultures represented in our classroom. The skin-tone construction paper, face cutouts, and skin-tone Sharpie markers brought smiles as students created self-portraits that truly reflected who they are. Many students shared personal stories connected to the books, and several were eager to reread the stories again and again.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, we are now continuing our literacy and social-emotional learning through culturally rich lessons that promote inclusivity, creativity, and student voice. Our next steps include expanding our writing projects using the new classroom portfolios, integrating more hands-on role-play into reading centers, and deepening conversations around identity and community. They cheered as the chairback pockets were placed on their chairs and could not wait to organize their supplies. They loved the bright colors and the feeling of having something just for them. We cannot thank you enough. The materials are being used daily. We do restorative circles on the carpet frequently and the students really look forward to it. I sit on the carpet and read the Junie B. Jones books to them and it's so exciting seeing them navigate first grade at the same times she does. We even selected the book for our book parade. Their journals are their best friend and a huge resource to them. There is a section for phonics, grammar, writing, and creativity for their doodles. If they need to know how to spell a word or need an adjective they always go to their journals.
