We have been using the bilingual book Diego: Diego Rivera and Dim Sum for Everyone! during shared reading to build vocabulary, comprehension, and cultural awareness, while Hair Love and Sulwe have sparked powerful conversations about self-confidence, identity, and kindness. During dramatic play, students have been using the Chinese breakfast and dim sum food set to role-play restaurant scenarios, practice oral language, and strengthen social skills. One of my favorite moments was watching students collaborate in the dramatic play center, taking turns as chefs and customers while using new vocabulary they learned from our books.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate and contagious. They were especially thrilled by the play food and the vibrant Hispanic Heritage Month flags, which helped them feel proud to see different cultures represented in our classroom. The skin-tone construction paper, face cutouts, and skin-tone Sharpie markers brought smiles as students created self-portraits that truly reflected who they are. Many students shared personal stories connected to the books, and several were eager to reread the stories again and again.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, we are now continuing our literacy and social-emotional learning through culturally rich lessons that promote inclusivity, creativity, and student voice. Our next steps include expanding our writing projects using the new classroom portfolios, integrating more hands-on role-play into reading centers, and deepening conversations around identity and community. These resources have not only strengthened academic skills but have also created a classroom where every child feels seen, valued, and excited to learn.","fullyFundedDate":1752279514122,"projectUrl":"project/pretend-play-real-representation/9364711/","projectTitle":"Pretend Play, Real Representation","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Banks","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5478993_orig.jpg?crop=1821,1821,x494,y424&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1686924791342","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5478993"},{"teacherId":5478993,"projectId":9459594,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, my students are already using these new resources in meaningful ways each day. The dry erase dots and floor spots have transformed our small-group instruction and movement activities. We now use them for phonics drills, math fact practice, line-up organization, and movement breaks that keep learning active and engaging. One of my favorite moments was watching students rotate through stations confidently, using the dry erase dots to solve number sentences right at their seats.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, the excitement in the room was instant. The students were especially thrilled by the new purple rug, which quickly became our favorite gathering spot for read-alouds, circle time, and class discussions. They proudly helped set up the organizers and immediately noticed how much more organized our classroom felt. Their faces truly lit up as they explored each new item, and they were eager to begin using everything right away.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, we are now able to move forward with even more student-centered instruction. Our next steps include expanding our small-group learning rotations, strengthening early literacy and math skills through hands-on practice, and continuing to build student independence and responsibility. The flat storage trays are now part of our daily writing and math centers, keeping student work and supplies neat and accessible. One especially meaningful moment was watching students independently transitions between activities without stopping instruction to search for materials.\r\n\r\nThe excitement when students first saw the new materials was unforgettable. They cheered as the chairback pockets were placed on their chairs and could not wait to organize their supplies. They loved the bright colors and the feeling of having something just for them. Many students shared how \"important\" and \"grown up\" their materials made them feel, which instantly boosted their confidence and responsibility.\r\n\r\nWith these new systems in place, our next steps include expanding student led centers, daily independent writing, and hands on math activities. I sit on the carpet and read the Junie B. Jones books to them and it's so exciting seeing them navigate first grade at the same times she does. We even selected the book for our book parade. Their journals are their best friend and a huge resource to them. There is a section for phonics, grammar, writing, and creativity for their doodles. If they need to know how to spell a word or need an adjective they always go to their journals.
