Because of you, students have access to paper, pencils, and markers.\r\n\r\nThese resources are used daily as students respond in handwriting to thought-provoking prompts, complete creative challenges, and take notes during lessons. Writing by hand helps students slow down, process ideas more deeply, and build both confidence and focus. With a pencil in hand and paper in front of them, students are able to organize their thoughts, practice fine motor skills, and express themselves in ways that feel personal and authentic. My favorite part of the donation is that I am able to see into the students' ability to compose sentences without grammar checks and technology assisting them. I can see their true ability and therefore support their educational needs. It is valuable data that I cannot get when they use their devices to write.\r\n\r\nThe dry erase markers allowed students to share ideas, brainstorm visually, and engage more fully in weekly challenges. These tools encourage participation and help make learning feel accessible and enjoyable for the students.\r\n\r\nYour donation ensures that students always have the materials they need to show their thinking. The time saved from having to find pencils, is appreciated! The common excuse of, \"I don't have a pencil\" was NOT once used in my class this year! We could focus on the important part of the lesson: thinking! Thank you for investing in my classroom and in the growth of my students. Your support has made a positive impact.","fullyFundedDate":1758219138488,"projectUrl":"project/back-to-old-school/9473947/","projectTitle":"Back to Old School!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Eimer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9593958"},{"teacherId":9523373,"projectId":9600092,"letterContent":"Your donations have helped me provide high-quality, high-interest novels-in-verse and graphic novel adaptations to a diverse population of 8th graders across a multitude of skill levels. \r\n\r\nNovels-in-verse are a sneaky way of getting students to better understand figurative language in poetry - or how it is used to create more of an emotional impact in fiction and writing. Adolescent students have a difficult time understanding language when it is use in the abstract - but this way, they are exposed to figurative language throughout the entirety of a story - and are far more interested in deconstructing and understanding it because it is used to tell a story.\r\n\r\nLikewise, I specifically chose the novel-in-verse 'Emmy in the Key of Code' because it taps into computer coding - a skill that is taught now as early as middle school as well as an important skill many students feel like will impact their future. \r\n\r\nI am trying to implement more relevant texts in my curriculum - this includes graphic novels. While teaching classic literature has its time and place, its important that English class stays relevant to our current generation of 8th graders and we need to incorporate reading materials they are interested in. They LOVED the graphic novel adaptation of Jason Reynolds' \"Long Way Down\"!\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is twofold - I encourage students to read their own self-selected texts, but sometimes we also read other works as a class or in small reading groups. Students then complete graphic organizers or quickwrites based off of ideas or themes in the class readings. \r\n\r\nUltimately, your donation helped give 150 students access to high-quality and high-interest reading materials. It also provided many students of need the materials to compile writing and notes on word studies, genre elements, grammar, and their quickwrites.","fullyFundedDate":1757527356463,"projectUrl":"project/rhyme-reason-inspiring-readers-throug/9600092/","projectTitle":"Rhyme & Reason: Inspiring Readers Through Novels-In-Verse","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lewis","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9523373"},{"teacherId":9593958,"projectId":8973462,"letterContent":"I want to extend my gratitude for your generous donation of pocket folders. These folders were used in our 7th-grade vocabulary program to create personalized \"vocabulary pockets\" for each student, a tool that has proven invaluable in making language learning both engaging and impactful.\r\n\r\nYour contribution has played a crucial role in helping our students develop a more dynamic vocabulary. By utilizing the pocket folders, we were able to give each student their own space to organize and track the new words they encounter throughout the year. This hands-on approach has made learning new vocabulary not only more interactive but also personal. Students are now able to reflect on and connect with words in a way that feels meaningful to them, allowing them to see how vocabulary can enrich their daily lives.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your thoughtful contribution.","fullyFundedDate":1734738481831,"projectUrl":"project/vocabulary-pockets/8973462/","projectTitle":"Vocabulary Pockets","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Eimer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9593958"},{"teacherId":9593958,"projectId":8976240,"letterContent":"I wanted to thank you for your generous donation of board games to our classroom. Your contribution has had a truly remarkable impact on the students, and I wanted to share just a few of the ways it has enriched their experience.\r\n\r\nFrom the moment we began incorporating the board games into our classroom activities, I witnessed an incredible transformation. Not only did the students learn about skills content, but they also learned so much about each other. The games provided a unique opportunity for students to collaborate, communicate, and build stronger relationships within our classroom community. It has been heartwarming to see them connect in ways that might not have happened otherwise, with students who wouldn't typically engage with each other laughing, strategizing, and enjoying one another's company.\r\n\r\nBeyond the connection, the board games taught essential life skills that will benefit the students for years to come. They gained invaluable lessons in respect, patience, and strategic thinking as they navigated their way through each game. They were able to learn how to think critically, collaborate as a team, and be mindful of their actions and words—skills that will serve them well both inside and outside of the classroom.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you for your incredible generosity. Your contribution has made a significant difference in the lives of my students, and I am so grateful for your support. This initiative has been a huge success, and I can't wait to see how the games continue to impact our classroom community in the future.","fullyFundedDate":1733171159332,"projectUrl":"project/learning-through-laughter/8976240/","projectTitle":"Learning Through Laughter","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Eimer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9593958"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_9046","usesÐǿմ«Ã½":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1260,"numTeachers":77,"percentFrplEligible":28,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":46,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":41,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"16.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":85.9,"schoolId":9046,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Small Middle School on @Ðǿմ«Ã½:","schoolName":"Small Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/austin-independent-school-district/small-middle-school/9046"}
