We are a small school in a rural area and are often overlooked. With the purchase of the novel, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, the students were able to extend their learning of non fiction writing and learn from a first hand account about the history of an escaped slave in the United States. The opportunity to study a work of non fiction, specifically a memoir written to expose a true experience of an enslaved person. With the use of the text, the students are also exposed to more rigorous text and higher levels of academic language and sentence structure. \r\n\r\nIn class, we used this text to analyze the literary themes of Freedom v. Loyalty, the struggle of Religion, and Dehumanization in class discussion, various in class activities/assignments, and a final assessment of comparing Frederick's idea of \"Freedom\" with real world instances and slavery occurring in around the world. \r\n\r\nThe students have been very engaged with the material and have grown in their understanding of these events in history.
