One of the most immediate impacts has been with the desk fidget bands. Students now \"check out\" a band at the start of class, and it has dramatically reduced off-task behaviors like tipping back in chairs. Instead, they are able to stay physically grounded and focused during independent reading and writing. At the same time, we are using the colored paper and sticky notes to organize activities and assignments. For example, students use color-coded prompt cards during writing tasks to stay on track, and sticky notes to annotate texts and track their thinking. These simple systems have made our classroom feel more structured, purposeful, and engaged.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate—especially for the fidget bands. They were so eager to use them that I quickly had to create a checkout system to make sure everyone had fair access! That excitement has translated into better focus and more productive work time. The colored materials have also helped students feel more invested in their work, as they can clearly see and organize their thinking in ways that make sense to them.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are continuing to build on these routines as we move into more complex writing tasks and class discussions. Students are using these materials to support multi-step writing projects, including analyzing texts and organizing evidence for essays. My goal is to keep strengthening their independence—helping them use tools like annotation, color-coding, and self-regulation strategies on their own. Thanks to your support, my students are not only more engaged, but also developing the habits and skills they need to succeed as readers, writers, and thinkers.","fullyFundedDate":1768503185339,"projectUrl":"project/everyday-tools-for-focused-reading-writ/10013100/","projectTitle":"Everyday Tools for Focused Reading, Writing, and Annotation","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Roamer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8125968"},{"teacherId":5172360,"projectId":10013383,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students are already using these new resources every day. One immediate change was being able to place **color-coded anchor charts at each table group printed in their original formats**, instead of black-and-white versions. These visuals help students track ideas during reading and writing activities and stay oriented during independent work. After coming in from hot outdoor lunches, students were also incredibly grateful to have access to **cold drinking water**, which helped them settle back into learning more quickly and comfortably. The freezer has even allowed me to occasionally provide Otter Pops as a small incentive that builds community and motivation while reinforcing positive classroom habits.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, students were especially excited about the classroom fridge and freezer and genuinely surprised by the amount of colored paper available for their learning activities. Seeing their reactions reminded me how much classroom environment matters. Students immediately began using the color-coded materials to organize their work more confidently and navigate assignments with greater independence.\r\n\r\nThese resources are continuing to support our current reading and writing work as students practice identifying evidence, organizing their thinking, and engaging more deeply with grade-level texts. With consistent access to structured visual supports and an organized classroom space, students are building stronger habits that will help them succeed throughout the rest of the school year and beyond. The students have had the opportunity to get to know the digital cameras better and have practiced using the new zoom lens to take exciting action shots of our sports teams. They are very excited to be working with the new equipment and feel like professionals when taking high quality photos. \r\nWe have also been able to host a \"photo booth\" opportunity at our school multicultural fest, which was a huge hit! Students acted as professional photographers--they posed families and gave directions for photos, operated the printer to get physical copies and presented their hard work to families all night long. It was definitely a new experience for my students and I think that being able to operate and show their skill with the new equipment made them feel confident and proud of their work.\r\nLastly, supplemental supplies like notebooks and 'Happy Birthday' pencils help to keep us organized and boost morale. Students now keep detailed photo journals where they reflect on their photography experience and plan for future projects. \r\nOverall, this project has helped us to become more enthusiastic and confident as members of the publications staff. We are currently using the graph paper to contribute to \"Math Portfolio\" for every student, but the real magic happens with the sticky notes and sticky note graphs.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the boxes, there was an immediate buzz of excitement. Their curiosity was sparked instantly, particularly by the sticky note graphs. It turned a task that usually feels tedious into something flexible and fun. During our latest coordinate geometry lesson, students used the sticky note graphs to plot data points at their desks and then physically moved them onto their larger-scale individual whiteboards on the wall. \r\n\r\nThe light bar has also become a focal point of our room—we set it to a setting to promote the learning environment, which has significantly improved the classroom's atmosphere. Seeing the light bar installed was the \"wow\" moment; they truly felt like their learning space had been upgraded to a professional studio.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for our \"Illuminating Math Minds\" project involves finding new ways to encourage students to \"illuminate\" their thinking every day. By merging these tactile tools with a bright, inviting environment, you've helped our students dream bigger while grounding those dreams in mathematical precision.\r\n\r\nThank you for supporting our project and helping us shine a light on the beauty of math!","fullyFundedDate":1768753575939,"projectUrl":"project/illuminating-math-minds/10037712/","projectTitle":"Illuminating Math Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Yarbrough","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10411153"},{"teacherId":8270955,"projectId":10028459,"letterContent":"Our snack and water station has quickly become an essential part of our classroom routine. Each morning, students who may not have had breakfast can grab a quick snack and a bottle of water before we begin learning. One powerful moment came during a recent collaborative reading activity. Students were analyzing character traits using the STEAL strategy, and I noticed a level of focus and participation that had been inconsistent before. Students who might typically struggle to stay engaged were contributing thoughtful ideas, citing evidence, and working productively with their groups. Having their basic needs met allowed them to fully show up as learners.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the snack and water station, their reactions were immediate and heartfelt. There was genuine excitement, but also a sense of relief. Several students quietly expressed gratitude, and others showed it through their actions—taking only what they needed and reminding classmates to be respectful of the shared resources. It has also helped build a stronger classroom community rooted in care and empathy. Students recognize that this space is not just about food, but about supporting one another so everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students continue to build their literacy and critical thinking skills through project-based learning units. Currently, they are working on collaborative discussions and written responses that require sustained focus, analysis, and teamwork. The snack and water station will remain a consistent support, ensuring that all students are ready to engage deeply in these tasks. Looking ahead, we will continue to integrate opportunities for student voice and real-world problem-solving, and thanks to this resource, students are better equipped—both physically and mentally—to take on these challenges.","fullyFundedDate":1768693407552,"projectUrl":"project/mr-villasanas-calming-corner/10028459/","projectTitle":"Mr. Villasana's Calming Corner","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Villasana","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8270955_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y1008&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1768435206809","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8270955"},{"teacherId":906566,"projectId":10037842,"letterContent":"The chess boards and clocks that we received have been put to very good use! Now, the students can practice with the clocks so that they're more prepared for the tournaments. \r\n\r\nWe also used the boards during my regular Computer Science classes. We learned about artificial intelligence, especially the cases of Deep Blue and AlphaGo, and we learned to play chess and Go in order to understand why these games were difficult for humans and for computers to play well. Having the chess boards available made the whole day go smoother - instead of printing off paper boards and flimsy pieces, we were ablet o use real, tournament-quality sets instead, which dramatically boosted student engagement.\r\n\r\nThank you again for the generous donation of chess boards and clocks. Manga combines visual storytelling with written dialogue, which helps students develop the ability to interpret meaning across multiple modes. Readers must pay attention not only to the words but also to facial expressions, panel sequencing, and visual cues, strengthening skills like inference, sequencing, and visual literacy. For many students, especially those who may feel intimidated by traditional novels, manga provides an accessible and engaging way to practice comprehension.\r\n\r\nIn addition to supporting foundational reading skills, manga introduces students to more complex narrative elements. Many series feature layered plots, character development, and themes such as friendship, perseverance, and identity. As students follow story arcs across volumes, they practice tracking character motivations, recognizing conflict and resolution, and making predictions about future events. Manga can also expose readers to different cultural perspectives, particularly Japanese customs and storytelling traditions, broadening their global awareness and encouraging curiosity about the world.\r\n\r\nPerhaps most importantly, manga helps foster a genuine love of reading during a critical developmental stage. Middle school students often enjoy the fast-paced storytelling and relatable characters, which can motivate even reluctant readers to engage consistently with texts. This increased reading volume builds fluency, vocabulary, and confidence over time. By valuing formats like manga in educational settings, educators and donors alike can support diverse reading preferences while still promoting meaningful literacy growth.","fullyFundedDate":1768706180409,"projectUrl":"project/manga-in-the-library-lets-go/10032621/","projectTitle":"Manga in the Library? The creativity was powerful, but even more meaningful were the conversations happening naturally while they worked—students sharing stories, finding common ground, and encouraging one another.\r\n\r\nWe are using these resources every week to build connection and leadership. Craft projects have become structured opportunities for dialogue, team-building, and collaborative planning for school-wide awareness activities. The materials have turned our meetings into hands-on, student-driven experiences rather than just discussions.\r\n\r\nNext, our students are planning a community-building campaign that includes student-designed visuals and peer-led activities focused on kindness and inclusion.
