One of the key areas that we're focusing on as a school is increasing the opportunities that scholars have to write--either words or sentences. I know, from past schools that I've worked in, students are far more willing to write when it feels less permanent, so mistakes can easily be corrected. This campus had no personal whiteboards in several areas of the school, including the media center. \r\n\r\nThe students were thrilled to have the new resources. I did give them a chance to simply use them \"for fun\" when they first arrived, but now they receive use almost every time classes are in the library. \r\n\r\nIn the spring, the media center will be hosting a \"book tasting,\" and I'm anticipating using the materials for giving them a chance to rank the books they read while also giving written responses clarifying why they like certain books. The students were very excited when they received their new rug and easel. We use the rug every day during our morning meetings and throughout our reading, writing, math, and science lessons. It's where we gather to share ideas, connect with one another, and work collaboratively.\r\n\r\nThe easel has also become an essential part of our learning. It helps us record students' background knowledge, capture their ideas, and explore vocabulary together. We use it often to learn cognates in math and science—examining words in both English and Spanish, along with their prefixes, suffixes, and meanings.\r\n\r\nBoth the rug and the easel play an important role in our classroom, enhancing learning opportunities and supporting our daily routines. We use the dry erase markers with our wipe boards every day. \r\nThe wipe boards are actually presentation folders so we can insert math templates and use dry erase markers which is perfect for showing and discussing math work. We also use them during phonics lessons to practice phonics skills and write high frequency words. \r\nWhen we are finished the wipe boards can be quickly erased and put away for later use. They really are one of my favorite student resources and students love using them. These materials are not replenished by the school so we would have to get the materials ourselves. \r\nOur students were so excited to receive the new binding machine and combs as you will see in their thank you letters. They loved hearing that someone wanted to help our classroom.
