Our program only started about 6 years ago and we are still acquiring supplies to use to develop & teach our curriculum units. We try to give students a good overview of career & technical pathways available to them both at the high school and beyond, such as computer science, robotics, fabrication, and engineering. The 6 Arduino devices purchased with this donation have gotten us much closer to a complete class set to use in a unit of study with our students in these elective classes. \r\n\r\nThe Arduinos are a great learning tool that combines computer programming and physical devices. They give my students the ability to create a system that uses inputs like push buttons to operate outputs like LED lights and motors. I work with four different groups of struggling middle school readers teaching Morphology. In addition, students read on the kindles daily, listening to an audio version of the book while following along with the text. This enables them to move through age-appropriate stories more quickly, and with more pleasure. It helps them improve their vocabulary, their reading comprehension and their fluency. The kindles allow students to turn on and off the audio version of the book very easily so they can read out loud to teachers every day and then jump back into listening when they have finished reading a page out loud.\r\n\r\nWithout the kindles, my students wouldn't read. Most of them have a history of pretending to read during independent reading time and rarely finishing books. With the kindles students read an average of twelve books a year, and some students read upwards of twenty! As you may know, many studies have tied the number of books a student reads to positive educational outcomes. Your generosity has directly enabled my students to read more!
