When I became a STEM teacher, I moved from a traditional science classroom to doing more \"hands-on\" learning where the teacher acts as a facilitator and students learn by doing. I love this model of education, but it can be very expensive for teachers. \r\n\r\n Enter: the amazing Ðǿմ«Ã½.org! The STEM supplies from this proposal allowed my students to do a variety of STEM challenges where they worked together to solve problems, applied STEM concepts, and wrote about their results. As you can see in some of the photos, they loved the activities. \r\n\r\n Also, I ended up going on maternity leave a little earlier than I had planned and these resources allowed my guest teacher to keep the \"hands-on\" learning going, even in my absence. Instead of just talking about the values of ALOHA in a textbook, my students are using these materials to literally transform our walls into a visual story of what they've learned from our community partners. It's been amazing to see the shift: my 8th graders aren't just \"using paint\"—they're using it as a tool to mentor the 7th graders, passing down techniques and leadership as they work together on these murals. The supplies didn't just give us a project to do; they created a \"Living Lab\" where students stopped asking for permission and started taking ownership, realizing that every brushstroke is part of the legacy they're leaving behind for the kids who will sit in these seats next year.","fullyFundedDate":1759449760579,"projectUrl":"project/the-empowerment-project/9776840/","projectTitle":"The Empowerment Project","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Allen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8974446_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1677799049631","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8974446"},{"teacherId":10042924,"projectId":9773174,"letterContent":"These resources are all about fostering independence. It gives them the agency to choose the environment where they work best.\r\n\r\nHaving body wipes and sanitizing wipes in the room has been life-changing. 8th graders are very self-conscious about their appearance and hygiene, especially after PE; having these available allows them to freshen up quickly and focus on their work rather than their discomfort.\r\n\r\nThe reaction was a mix of genuine excitement and appreciation. Students can sometimes play it \"cool,\" but there was no hiding their enthusiasm when the Pringles, Chex Mix, and Fruit by the Foot arrived. For many of my students, the school day is long and their appetites are growing; seeing the \"Snack Station\" fully stocked with Nabisco variety packs and healthy granola bars made them feel respected and cared for. One student said, \"Finally, a teacher who understands how hungry we actually are!\" They were also surprisingly excited about the Wacky Tracks fidgets, which many use as a quiet tool to manage stress during long lectures.\r\n\r\nThe biggest impact was the beanbag chair. I have students lining up wanting to be first in the line to claim the beanbag chair to sit on. They have even created a system of who gets to sit on it and when. I would not think something as simple as a bean bag chair would have such a great impact on these kids.","fullyFundedDate":1759449950341,"projectUrl":"project/essentials-for-success-fueling-focus-an/9773174/","projectTitle":"Essentials for Success: Fueling Focus and Confidence","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Ryan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10042924_orig.jpg?crop=995,995,x659,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1759171464574","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10042924"},{"teacherId":10042924,"projectId":9750442,"letterContent":"This project provides the \"fuel and the tools\" my students need to be successful every single day. The students were delighted by the variety of colors and instantly understood that these bags were a special tool to safeguard their literary treasures. This initiative has tangibly increased their sense of responsibility and effectively taught them the value of book care, ensuring that our wonderful library collection will remain pristine for years of enjoyment by future readers.\r\n\r\nThe next step is for our students to fully utilize these new book bags to keep their library books safe while in their care. We are already seeing remarkable results: thanks to your contribution, there has been a dramatic reduction in both damaged books and overdue returns! Meanwhile, the acrylic sign holders have given our space a polished, professional look that fosters student independence by clearly highlighting what we have to offer. Perhaps most touchingly, the snacks have turned the library into a genuine hub of community and comfort; by meeting their basic needs, we have seen students better able to focus on reading, research, and bonding with one another.\r\n\r\nLooking forward, we are excited to see how these improvements will continue to build a culture of literacy and respect for library resources. The new resources—including hair nets, hair ties, gloves, disinfecting wipes, paper towels, cookie scoopers, and craft sticks—have been immediately put to use and have profoundly changed how our students approach their work. We are currently tackling a unit on basic baking and sanitation, and your materials have become the cornerstone of this lesson. In a recent class, students were making basic sugar cookies. The moment they were asked to put on their hair nets and gloves, there was a palpable shift. One student, Maya, who is usually quite reserved, carefully put on her gear and declared, \"Wow, I feel like a real chef now!\" That sense of professionalism and pride has been the most powerful reaction. We use the disinfecting wipes and paper towels every day, not just after cooking, but before and during cleanup, empowering the students to take full ownership of their workspace. This small step has instilled a critical, real-world lesson: hygiene and cleanliness are not a chore; they are the foundation of quality food preparation. The cookie scoopers have also been essential, teaching them about consistency and fairness in portion control, leading to uniform, perfectly-baked treats. \r\n\r\nThe impact of this project goes far beyond a single lesson; it's about building a culinary safety culture. The materials address not just the \"how\" of cooking, but the \"why\" of hygiene, protecting both the food and the students themselves. For our next steps, we are moving from basic cookies to a more complex project: creating individual, custom-designed miniature fruit tarts. This task requires even more meticulous handling of ingredients and detailed presentation. The craft sticks will become versatile instruments for spreading pastry cream and decorating the small tarts, and the hygiene supplies will be even more critical as they work with delicate, perishable fillings. Your support has given these young chefs the tools to meet industry standards right here in their high school kitchen, ensuring they graduate with a genuine understanding of food safety and professional conduct. Your generous contributions have brought a burst of creativity and practical skills development to our classroom. The simple, yet vital, supplies you funded—like markers, glue, laminating sheets, colored pencils, and scissors—are being put to use daily to encourage students to express their ideas visually and tangibly, fulfilling our goals of enhancing creativity and encouraging collaboration.\r\n\r\nWe are currently using these resources for a project where students are creating \"Concept Displays\" to explain complex vocabulary and scientific principles. The markers and colored pencils allow them to make their diagrams pop, ensuring the displays are interactive and visually engaging. The glue and scissors enable them to construct three-edge foldable displays and models, transforming flat paper into tangible learning tools. The best part? The laminating sheets are preserving these student-created resources, turning them into durable classroom aids that future students can reference. Watching students collaborate—one student cutting precisely with the scissors, another carefully coloring, and a third assembling with the glue—demonstrates how this project is effectively building practical skills like teamwork and fine motor control.\r\n\r\nThe student reaction when they first saw the bins filled with these brand-new, colorful materials was one of sheer delight and excitement. Our students, who come from diverse backgrounds and possess unique talents, immediately grasped the freedom these tools offered. They were excited to move beyond standard pencil and paper, recognizing that they could now express their exceptional creativity without limits. The provision of these quality supplies has empowered them to harness their individual strengths and feel confident in taking ownership of their work. Our next step in this project is to use their finished, laminated Concept Displays to teach their peers. This peer-teaching exercise will solidify their communication skills and further reinforce their learning, bringing this successful project to a powerful conclusion.","fullyFundedDate":1728773071358,"projectUrl":"project/creative-classroom-supplies-for-engaging/8872816/","projectTitle":"Creative Classroom Supplies for Engaging Learning Activities","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ancheta","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9343626"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_50794","usesÐǿմ«Ã½":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":725,"numTeachers":55,"percentFrplEligible":56,"percentAsian":39,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":18,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":55.1,"schoolId":50794,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Ilima Intermediate School on @Ðǿմ«Ã½:","schoolName":"Ilima Intermediate School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/hawaii/leeward-oahu-school-district/ilima-intermediate-school/50794"}
