Right after my project funded, the students earned 10 bright lights and they wanted to have Game Day! We spent the whole afternoon playing games and all of these new materials were fantastic! The students have so much fun! They were all sharing, cooperating with one other to take turns, to share and teaching one another how to play. As teachers, we were so impressed at how the students spent this time together as sometimes unstructured time or schedule times can be difficult for some students. Everyone was so engaged! The Hoberman balls are great to support breathing techniques during SEL lessons as well as to calm down and refocus after unstructured times such as recess. \r\n\r\nThe timers are one of the items we received that I was most excited for. Having timers in a variety of styles and durations has been great for offer choices to support different student needs. Additionally, the birthday 'stuff' such as the birthday pencils/bracelets are a huge help. Being able to give each student a small gift for their birthday has really gone a long way in building relationships and now my former students seek me out on their birthday as they know it is my tradition to give them small goodies on their birthday.\r\n\r\n'Thank you' does not fully express the gratitude I have for everyone who chooses to support my project and students. In this project, you provided new chromebooks that are helping me to slowly build a class set to support all students.\r\n\r\nThere are many activities and lessons that I have students using computers for in the library. They participate in interactive lessons about holidays, cultures and other topics that support what they are learning in class. I help them to access books that read aloud to them if they are struggling to access grade level materials as well as books in their first languages to support constant literary growth. Through the SORA app (which anyone in Massachusetts (and probably elsewhere can use- please check it out!), students are able to access copies of books that are almost always checked out due to their popularity. Additionally, and perhaps my favorite anecdote is when students that share a first language read books together that are not available in our library (yet!). Sometimes that looks like two students reading the newest Dog Man with each other in Portuguese. Other times it has looked like students reading the a popular Raina Telgemeier graphic novel \"together\" but in English and Spanish translations. The entire class was shocked when they saw the new iPads. It's powerful to have such advanced technology in the classroom. We use the iPads during math class. When students come across a tricky problem, we use the iPads to pull up visuals and videos in real time to help clarify important concepts. Students also show their work digitally with the Apple Pencil which can be shared with the entire class. This has sparked deep conversations around topics such as multiplication, division of fractions, and numeric patterns. This has also allowed conversations to continue over a series of days as work can be saved and pulled up at additional times. \r\n\r\nThis project especially helped students who are learning English. One student in particular can now access group lessons and discussions more independently because they can take a picture of the text with an iPad and translate the words in Spanish in seconds. They are able to now do this on their own which allows them to follow the lesson with more ease.\r\n\r\nStudents are currently reading a chapter book about chess. Each day they are assigned random partners to partner read with. This has fostered collaboration and genuine relationships as students are able to work with others who they don't typically work closely with in class. At first it was difficult when a student who was learning to sound out words needed a significant amount of time to read a section while a fluent reader listened patiently. However, with the iPads it became a perfect match. Students asked if they could use the iPads to help communicate with their partners. One student read sections of the book, at first carefully sounding out words and now reading sentences in English outloud. The other student then summarizes what each page is about using Google Translate on the iPad. Their partner reads the summary in their first language which helps them understand what happened in the story before they move on to the next part. The iPads are helping students learn English and how to read at a much faster rate. The iPads are also a wonderful tool that is fostering collaboration. I have a couple of kids who are really attuned to puzzles and they've engendered puzzle interest and perseverance among the rest of their classmates. My children helped me carry all the Donors Choose boxes from our front office down to the classroom. They didn't even know what was in the boxes, and they were already excited. That evening, I sorted the contents so that I could share the puzzles we'd be using for our then current unit of study on community. The next day, their eyes were wide and their faces joyful when I introduced several new puzzles for our free choice play/learning time. \r\n\r\nThat first day, I put out the table top puzzle set that depicts different community helpers/careers. We had just visited our local fire station, and students were delighted to see a puzzle of a firefighter, along with that of a teacher, a chemist, a veterinarian, and more. I also shared a floor puzzle (with large pieces for little hands) that depicts the four seasons. We had recently read a book on summer turning into fall and had already been discussing the changes in nature that we perceived around us. The puzzles were an amazing addition to our choice time, not just for all the reasons that puzzles are fun and educational, and not just because of the appeal of novelty items, but also because they fit in with what we've been learning about, so kids had lots of language to use around the puzzle content. All but one of my students are English language learners this year, and this makes the language piece especially important. \r\n\r\nSince then, I've introduced several more puzzles and continue to do so every 2-3 weeks. My students have loved all of them! At one point, a student's mother talked to me about her daughter's sensitivity to having lost her father in their native country, and to the fact that their family consists of a mother and grandmother instead of a mom and dad. At that point, the All Kinds of Families puzzle set was a perfect addition to choice time, supporting our discussions on how families come in all shapes and sizes. Tomorrow, I'm going to put out two new floor puzzles that go with our current unit on construction and the city. Thanks to your generous donations, these two building site puzzles featuring dump trucks, cranes, and steam rollers (vehicles that K-1 students get very excited about!) will be available to students right as we're also reading books about the design and construction of buildings, bridges, and parks. I can't say enough about the positive impact on learning that cohesive materials and resources have on my young students! \r\n\r\nMeanwhile, I have the rest of the puzzles you've donated set aside and labeled for our upcoming units, Animals all Around and Growing and Changing. I'm so excited to share all of them, but I especially can't wait for my kids to see the Kaplan Wild Animals and North American Animals Floor Puzzles set. They are puzzles made from photographs and my kids are going to LOVE them. \r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of my students this year and for all my years of teaching ahead (and even beyond that), THANK YOU for your generosity in supporting my Preschool Puzzle Palooza Project. Every time I pull out puzzles when setting up choice time, every time I see my students attentively focused on figuring them out, and every time I hear them discussing the pictures on the puzzles - practicing their English and pondering themes we're studying - I'M GRATEFUL TO YOU! \r\n\r\nWith so much appreciation for your kindness, Aida Luszczynska\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your generous support of my Preschool Puzzle Palooza project! \r\n\r\nAt the time when all our new puzzles arrived at our school, my K-1 students had tired of doing the puzzles I'd had in my classroom since the beginning of the school year. The students are eager to 'play' with the materials. Most recently we have been using the notched sticks, craft magnets, and the explorers bridge building set as station activities. We have started a unit titled 'What is an Engineer'. Throughout this unit students are developing engineering habits of mind by following the engineer design process. At each station students are expected to follow the engineer design process to solve a problem using the notched sticks, craft magnets, and the explorers bridge building set The materials give students the opportunity to engage in the 'create' part of the engineer design process. The part where they actually get to build and create. In the stations students are using the different materials to create the tallest tower or to build the strongest bridge. The hands on materials nurture opportunities for play. In my experience the stations and acts of playfulness are leading learners to experience a sense of joy that adds to their engagement in the engineering design process. \r\n\r\nTo start this unit students were given the task of building towers using paper and tape. Many students were unsuccessful because they did not build a sturdy base for their tower and although the tower was tall it feel over. I overheard students saying 'we have to figure out how to make it stand up'. This lead to some excellent conversations about the importance and design of a base in a structure. After the paper towers we moved into stations using different tower building materials. Students designs and creations became more stable. When a students' tower did not stand up on its own we paused to discuss why that was happening. Students were overheard talking about the base of the tower and how to make changes to the base to provide more support. In these discussions students were using content specific vocabulary such as base of tower, and lets test the tower. One students said 'I think we should try a rectangle shape for the base'. Another students said 'we have to learn from our mistake we can't build it in a tube shape we need to try something different' It was clear that students were beginning to see the connection between the tower height, stability, and the importance of failure. \r\n\r\nIt is clear that the students are not only getting joy from the materials but they are also deepening their understanding of engineering design process. Students are able to pinpoint what part of the design cycle they are in and where they are going next. Students are able to tell you what made a design successful or unsuccessful. They are also connecting designs to materials, meaning which designs work best with specific materials. It has given me great pleasure to watch, listen and learn from these budding engineers. With so much appreciation for all of the donors who helped to make this a reality. With your donations we are truly preparing students to think like and believe themselves to be successful engineers even if it does not work the first time!","fullyFundedDate":1746238698357,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-stem/9036754/","projectTitle":"Hands ON STEM","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Zils","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3145319"},{"teacherId":2673199,"projectId":9381669,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for being a part of bringing summer reading back to my school!
