The incentives also gave students something positive to work toward, helping create a classroom environment that feels supportive, encouraging, and focused on growth.\r\n\r\nSince the project was funded, I've seen a noticeable increase in student motivation and effort. Students are more willing to participate, complete assignments, and take pride in their work because they feel recognized and supported. Your kindness has helped foster a sense of excitement and responsibility for learning, and it has reinforced the idea that their education truly matters. When the boxes arrived, the students were immediately intrigued. They all wanted to know what was in the boxes, so I told them it was books. Their next question was \"Are the books for us?\" I was surprised by these questions as the majority of the students in the class are boys who profess to dislike reading. However, when I told them the books were for them, they all wanted to know if they could look in the boxes and see the books. \r\n\r\nThe next class day, the boxes were open and sitting on a side desk. When the boys arrived in class, they all migrated to the boxes asking if they could look at the books. Some of the titles were familiar, and I heard a few boys comment that they loved that book. Most of the boys had not read any of them and wanted to know when we were going to use them in class. The intrigue created engagement before we ever started using the books.\r\n\r\nOver the next few days, I moved the books to the window ledge of my classroom. All of my students noticed the books and started asking questions. My 7th graders were sad to learn that the books would be used with my 9th graders. However, they still wanted to read them; in fact, several asked if they could borrow one and use it for their next book report. Simply having new books in the students view changed their desire to read. \r\n\r\nFor our unit of study, my 9th grade students were able to choose one of the books to read. Students who chose the same book were put into groups called Literature Circles. Each day, the students have the opportunity to silently read the book for about 15 minutes, and then they get into their groups to discuss the book. They get to pose their own questions, form their own opinions, and share their thoughts with others. The students are eager to discuss and want more time when I would usually get complaints. The students love the stories, but more importantly, they are engaged and invested in their own learning. The boys have now started asking when they can read the other books. \r\n\r\nI could not have created this atmosphere in my classroom without your help. Thank you for your generous donation to improve literacy among my students.","fullyFundedDate":1767993527507,"projectUrl":"project/the-power-of-reading/9984508/","projectTitle":"The Power of Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Wardleigh","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8276637_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1657578325926","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8276637"},{"teacherId":6868511,"projectId":9713810,"letterContent":"The rock stops have been SUCH A HUGE blessing in our classroom. We were in such a dire need and my budget this school year could only go so far with essential supplies. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for thinking of these amazing kids who just want to play. This project quickly became one of the most engaging activities of the term. Access to quality art supplies made a noticeable difference in student motivation and effort, allowing students to take ownership of their work and approach writing in a more creative, hands-on way. The materials encouraged experimentation, revision, and pride in the final product.\r\n\r\nIn Creative Writing classes, students produced short story zines that paired original narratives with illustrations, helping them practice essential storytelling skills such as character development, setting, and theme. Many students who struggle with writing found that illustrating first helped them generate ideas and build confidence. In English classes, students created study guide zines to prepare for an upcoming project, requiring them to synthesize information, organize key ideas, and present content clearly. The visual format supported comprehension and retention more effectively than traditional note-taking.\r\n\r\nThank you for your generous contribution to our classroom and community.
